Cotton is good in universally hot conditions, such as around India where cotton originated. But even then, it just stinks up so easily in that weather. Cotton/coolmax blends are ideal.

I used to be a shill for natural fibres and I still am to some extent but for /out/ and warm weather I go synthetic. For cold weather I'd ideally go with wool.
So, I don't see much point to cotton unless it's just a non-/out/ day in "normal" weather.

Nope, it's situation dependant like everything.

If you're looking for a quick drying fiber in an extreme cold environment, maybe it's not the right choice.

If hiking in warm weather where sweating and letting it stay on you it's not a problem, cotton is fine.

Isn't the whole idea not to sweat in the first place? Cotton just makes it worse but it's not like sweating in synthetics is going to be fine, sweating under any clothing in cold conditions is bad.

So the real advice is to bring a spare shirt in case you do sweat. I'd rather have a fresh and dry gotten shirt then just wear the same synthetic shirt the whole time.

Why would I do that? I don't wear synthetic, I only wear wool and cotton. Usually when people on this board talk about cotton in a negative way, it is because if you are going to be /out/ for longer than a day in cold climates it really is rotten.
