Time for me to get an ocean kayak for fishing.
Is it worth all the extra cash to get a pedal drive?
If so which one?

Hobie Mirage are great for lure fishing in tidal waters or if you're covering real distances.

I hate living in Mordor, but opportunity comes with compromise and the north side is just closer to the rim country.

Shea to HWY 87 & the rim lakes.
L101 to Ben Avery or Lake Pleasent.

South Scottsdale and Tempe Town Lake was ok for a pond. I moved north 2.5 yrs ago, you should see the new "lakeshore" builds now.

I can't complain, water inna desert is a boon no matter! Kinda miss the old Devilhouse, tho.

damn thats a great deal I would have already bought them. Moving 17 ft kayaks is super easy though. I have a truck so I just take the tailgate off and strap down my 15 ft yak. But I suspect you don't so you would have to go drop an extra 300-500 on a rack.
Really though that is a great price for a mid end ocean yak so it would still be worth

I just got a Necky 15 or 16' off CL for $200. Didn't get a chance to try it yet. Other yak is a 13.5 Feelfree Lure. SOT, love it but heavy as fuck. SOTs are great for fishing.

I don't know anything about ocean kayaks, but with whitewater boats you put inflatable float bags in the stern, so they can never *completely* fill with water.

These measures keep the boat from sinking but it can be impossible to get enough water out of they kayak to make it functional again.
With the sit on top you just flip it back over and be on your merry way provided you can find your paddle.

I've never seen what you describe with a whitewater boat unless it's caught in a pin, and in that case the boat can be bent all to hell anyway. If you're in a situation where you can just "flip the sit-on-top", then you should be able to push an upside down kayak to somewhere where you can drain it. Sit-on-tops have their advantages, but so do traditional kayaks.

To clarify: you can roll a real kayak. You can't roll a sit-on-top. Even if you are unable to roll for some reason and are forced to wet exit, there is still an air pocket in the boat because it's upside down. It's not going to sink. But you really should get good at rolling, anyway, if you're paddling a real kayak.
