at the top of every 14er?

I always bring a small rock from the bottom to the top with me and throw it at me rock pile. I always just assumed it was a collection of people doing that over a long period time and the big rocks are from overachievers but now that I say that out loud it seems dumb and I’m probably wrong.

It’s gotta be erosion and stuff. Too high for trees to grow so you aren’t going to have grass or dirt and any sand or loose smaller stuff is going to get washed away by rain/wind/snow and end up downhill.

They do. I made the mistake of reaching the summit of a 14er on a summer afternoon. I saw a nearby peak get hit by lightning on my way down.

The freeze-thaw cycle is part of a bigger process known as weathering, Wetting and drying, crystallization,pressure change, and a a temperature gradient could cause the rock to shatter.

Cracks are common in all large rocky masses water gets in those cracks and cause them to break up.

Piles might be due to man's activity.
Or snow might pile up during winter, moving rocks while it accumulates and, when it melts melts, the rocks will then accumulate on one spot.
Repeat the process, you now have a rock pile due to natural events.

to answer your question op, it's called a talus deposit and it's the result of the above processes
