Hunting is an aspect, though every single man will have this idea, and trapping is much quieter, cheaper, effective and keeps the quarry alive. Still, if you can nail a rabbit or bird, that's a great advantage
If people get wind that you have zero firearms, your house will be a target, even if you board it up. If I'm hungry and I have people with me, I'm going to break into the house of the guy who I never saw at the range, never saw any evidence of his gun ownership etc.
Finally, even if you don't need a gun to shoot people, someone else will, and bullets and a pistol will be worth its weight in gold in trading. Cartons of cigarettes, lighters, fuel, tinned food, batteries, bullets, firearms and maintenance, water and water filters, these are all commodities that you can trade that will really help you out
Plus in the coming race war, the government will not be too happy with the dissident citizens and will probably mobilise some kind of secret police. You want the ability to join a resistance or militia and defend yourself with your white brothers
