Can't recommend these, since I haven't tried them. More moving parts means more opportunity for failure though. If I was you, I'd go with a Cold Steel Saperka ("Special Forces Shovel" they call these I think) and a good multitool. With that I have experience and can recommend them.

Yeah their attitude is tacticool mall ninja but I've heard nothing but good things about the special forces shovel. They didn't really fuck with the design, they just improved the steel grade on the red army version.

The only complaint I hear is that they lacquer the handle instead of using BLO so it's a blister risk. But then you just sand the thing down and add the oil yourself.

The thing is, for ordinary hikes you don't need a shovel at all. Just a little plastic garden trowel for a poop hole and that's it. For car camping or an emergency kit, that's another story. The non-folding means it's a bit longer but still packs pretty well, is VERY light weight, and pretty much bombproof.

All that extra shit: folding, serrated saws, folding picks, hollow handles filled with doohickeys-- that's the shit I would have expected to have seen on a CS shovel. Instead they made something that world really really well and doesn't fuck itself up with dubious extras.

sure, a lightweight gardening trowel is more then enough for hiking, if you wanna save weight just a get a triangle shaped piece of stiff plastic. but an Entrenching tool offers SO much versatility, IMO people should take that ekstra weight they put in HUGE knives and put it into an E-tool, in finely more useful

don't get one of these. They are complete shit. I had one that I bought in China and it even had an extended haft you could screw on (for more leverage when digging). It was unreasonably heavy. I'm not some ultralight nerd or anything but the shovel was just way heavier than it had any right to be. Yes, it outweighed its usefulness.

Like everyone else has said here: moving parts everywhere (resulting in failure within two weeks of use). By the time that happened there was noticeable rust on all the metal parts. It can't keep an edge for long, yet sharpening that piece of shit was a nightmare. The side edge is only meant to be sharpened on one side but the opposite side is completely blunt (wedge shaped grind). I gave up trying to sharpen the crescent part early on.

Now I just use a normal fucking shovel inna woods. No moving parts, no can opener, ruler, wire cutter bullshit you're not going to ever use, and it's a quarter of the weight.

Drainage is the biggest thing. Sometimes, you don't have time to find the perfect place to pitch your tent. So, you need to dig a shallow trench around part of it to direct rain water or just level off a few places under the tent.

I don't see the point. I have both a gardening shovel and garden trowel and a folding camp shovel. I'd rather have the folding camp shovel. It folds up, has a wider blade than the garden trowel, narrower blade than the garden shovel, makes work easier & faster, and can change its head orientation from shovel to pick. It is far lighter and far shorter than the garden shovel. It is heavier and longer than the garden trowel when unfolded and shorter than the trowel while folded. It is far stronger and sturdier than the garden trowel and about equal to the garden shovel.

The garden trowel is better used in non-compacted soil such as in a garden plot. The folding camp shovel does well in normally compacted soils. The garden shovel does well in heavily compacted soils. For e-tools, some versions are better than others obviously.

No, the Gerber e-tool is a copy of the Fiskars e-tool. Fiskars (Finland) owns Gerber. It was originally designed for the Finnish Defence Forces.

Fiskars = FDF standard issue
Gerber = USMC standard issue

frankly a spike hawk would do better in heavily compacted soil. the roman army had an e-tool called the dolabra it was basically kinda like a spike hawk. they used that and baskets to move the soil and dig trenches and shit.

I dont know the site so I couldnt say for sure. But i can tell you its pretty well always a bad idea to give any information to a site that uses http protocol especially a credit card number. legit or not. The traffic to and from this site is unencripted and therefore easily sniffed out by anyone looking for it. Im sure its a big ol' bulls eye for cyber crimminals. Even tho you'd probably get your shovel, theres a good chance it will cost you alot more than your expecting. If they have an encripted site (https) than be sure your using that one.

Regular shovel makes a good walking stick and I guess would serve to scare off a hungry animal plus a good ridge pole for a tarp shelter you could even wrap a little bit of duct tape or zip ties etc around the handle
