Anyone been to Opeongo Lake, Algonguin Prov. Park, or other eastern Canadian wilderness parks like Lady Evelyn Smoothwater? They sound remote and wild as hell but I don't know much about them. Please post experiences, I go to the Adirondacks often but am looking for something even more backcountry.

I've been to Algonquin. Sounds remote, but it's the closest big park to Toronto and it's pretty busy, especially in summer. It's nice, but you will see other people. Smoothwater is more remote and probably quieter, also look into Quetico (but my Quetico trip fell through so I don't know for sure what it's like).

There are backpacking trails at least in Algonquin (not sure about the others), but camping in NE canada mostly means canoeing. There are outfitters who will set you up though.

Ive been to Algonquin and Opeongo. Wnet canoing in the last week of september. Wonderfull time to visit. Autumn colours. Not too many people. we only met a few canoes near the entry points. But Ive heard that during summer there is a lot of people. Got a tip to put a long portage, like 3-5 km between you and an entry point then there is not to many people.

This is what the southern part of algonquin looks like around 1st of october. Mostly decideous trees. In the northern part it is mostly pine and spruce.

The established camp sites are very neat. When i was in Algoquins we never passed an occupied campsite and it was almost as if the park was deserted when you lost sight of the entry points.

It was beautifull in the autumn. Highly recomended.

I do not know about hiking though. It seems as if everything is made for canoing, but there are a few trails and some logging roads. The forest is to thick to hike through of there is no trail.

I saw plenty of wildlife. Including: moose (pic related), black bear, otter, beaver, jumping mouse, other mice, alls sorts of birds, some deer

This was our route. We spend 7 days/ 6 nights.

I bet that even durinng summer, the areas furthest away from the entry points along the highway will be very deserted. The park is huge. As far as I recall there are entry points to the north not located along the highway. I would use those if you want to be alone.

Is is a great place to fish during spring. We did not catch many fish however. This is the most mentionable. A 500 g brook trout. Beautifull fish.

The terrain is made for canoeing, but there are a few backpacking trails in the park.

Went canoeing an algonquin a few years ago. It was great. I paid Algonquin Outfitters for the canoe and trip plan, which made it easy. I don't remember seeing many other folks but I went Monday to Friday and left before the weekend.

Highly recommend, avoid the leeches though.

Algonquin is great. Stay off Canoe Lake unless it isn't peak season because as an access point, that place is flooded with newbs and families and it just takes forever to get parked and out on the water. Protip: A nice easy but challenging route is Canoe to Joe to Little Doe to Tom Thompson (watch for low levels due to the beaver dams), portage into Sunbeam. I love sunbeam. Remote, not far, sorta easy to get to but keeps out almost all the riff raff. Exit out via Burnt Island Lake. Or make it longer and check the map and circle through Big Trout Lake.

I'm not a fan of Opeongo. It's a big lake with very little shelter and on the east side of the park, winds can whip that thing up fast. We had crests going over our bow one time, I might as well have been white water river rafting!

The park really is amazing. No two lakes look the same (although a lot look similar). Campsite are well maintained but on the most popular routs you will have a hell of a time finding firewood late in the season.

If you can get into the interior (marked on the official map) you will see vey few people. Some lakes you stop on you will be the only ones.

Personal preferences: the north is beautiful and often secluded, but can get a lot of bugs. Big lakes but not a lot of portages if I remember right.
West is nice and has smaller lakes if you are not comfortable with large open water. Lots of portaging tho not too long. Lots of people.
South, honestly not much there. Thought it was kinda boring. Just my thoughts tho.
Central is cool but the most busy. Lots of car campers. Canoe lake in middle season is crazy.
East is kind of cool and more open than the rest of the park. But few routs and some bugs. Lots of poison ivy.
Opeongo is a beast. Kicked my ass (but still beat the water taxi. Fuck yeah). Stay away if not very experienced.

Overall it's a great place. Go if you can.

Protip from me to you: Gather firewood away from the campsite. If you make a stop in your canoe 1 km away from your desired campsite you can gather all that you need in 5 mins.

I thought everyone did this. Good to know I'm not the only person. Another Protip: Walk into the bush away from your camp. Most campers don't go out of eyesight from their base. A 1 minute walk into the treeline normally yields incredible results.
