Feel free to post tobaccos (no weed allowed), pipes, collections, pics of favorite combos for going /out/, pics of what you're doing with your pipe and any questions you might have.
Want to get into smoking pipes without spending too much cash?
Get a Missouri Meerschaum Legend corncob pipe and a pouch of either Prince Albert, Carter Hall or Half and Half tobacco, available at most drugstores.
What you'll need: pipe, tobacco, lighter or matches, pipe cleaners, and either a regular old nail or a pipe tool (combination tamper, scoop, and small pick).
All of these together should run you less than $20.
Having trouble keeping your pipe lit? Fill it with less tobacco and smoke it slower than you think you need to, lightly tamping as needed when the smoke starts thinning out.
If you're still having trouble, try filling your pipe this way:

Welp my gf has been getting upset with me for smelling like smoke when I have a nighttime pipe before bed. I need to hit her with some facts about pipe tobacco. She thinks that pipes and cigarettes are basically the same devil, and I know this is not true having smoked both, but I had trouble explaining it. Of course I will smoke my pipe if I feel like it, but I must admit that I am less likely to enjoy it if I am guilted by friends or family at the end of the day because they haven't done any research and think I'm bound to die from cancer now. Has anyone ever known someone that had some health problems due to pipe smoking? My uncle has smoked a pipe constantly for 30+ years and he's in pretty good shape. I can not think of any friend that has a relative w pipe-related problems or cancers. Is this just propaganda about the pipe? I feel like I can't win because there has been so much against cigarette smoke the past decade or so that everyone fucking hates tobacco now and refuses to believe that there is a difference in pipes and cigarettes...

All I want is to find a Cherry pipe tobacco that smells like the stuff my neighbor used to smoke when I was a kid, even my mom who hates the smell of smoke liked the smell of that stuff. It smelled mostly of cherry, a hint of vanilla and somehow still had a hint of whiskey or bourbon to it, If I could find that blend, I can die happy.

>>1158813 The most reliable study the FDA goes by found that mortality for pipe smokers who smoke less than 10 pipes per day is like 1.02 standard deviations. Negligible.
More interesting: people who smoke a pipe live, on average, 2 years longer than non pipe smokers. Now realize that category includes cigarette smokers, but still.
If you're having a pipe every other day or even every day, you probably have other risks in your life that are greater potential for causing you illness. Like working a sedentary job, drinking more than you should, getting too much sun, too much exposure to vehicle exhaust etc.
Is it 'safe'? No. There IS a danger to it. Is it the same as smoking and inhaling a pack of smokes a say? Absolutely not. Practice good oral hygiene and don't combine alcohol with tobacco (strips the protection off your mucous membranes), and just limit your enjoyment to a reasonable frequency.

>>1159065 I don't see anyone here pushing tobacco on people. It's literally never happened in the past 10 threads. We get people asking about it and we provide honest answers about why we enjoy it.
Like anything enjoyable you have to measure the risks vs what you get from it. For us we are willing to accept a very marginal increase in cancer risk for the net gain of enjoyment, and other people should be free to make that same assessment.
I do the same thing when I go rock climbing, or take a road trip, or go backpacking. Risk vs reward.
Enjoyed in moderation and without the cocktail of cigarette additives, and not inhaled, tobacco has marginal risk.
Assess your environment for the following things:
>Synthetic carpet >furniture that isn't 20 years old >fabric softener >any mattress that isn't made of latex with all natural outer covering I'm going to guess you can check off most of that list. You are constantly swimming in a vat of carcinogens and endocrine disruptors 24/7, but you get up in arms about someone smoking a pipe literally once or twice a week? You've swallowed alarmist overtures that have washed over from cigarettes which are genuinely dangerous due to additives, quantity consumed, and most critically being inhaled.
I'm going to do whatever the fuck I want and so should everyone else.

Here is an /out/ with pipe post hopefully. This pipe was found at an archaeological dig. It is a mid 19th century ceramic pipe. I know you Europeans are going to laugh but it's fairly old for the Midwest.

What's a good tobacco to start up smoking again? Fresh tobacco is better than not. Slower smoking is better than faster. Packing your pipe properly will take practice to get the hang of, but looser is usually better than tighter to start with. Don’t be afraid to use your tamper-a lot of the time you can save a relight or two by tamping at the right time.

Just bought this beauty. It is from an small scale manufacturer from Germany and every pipe is a unique design. Always liked the Churchwarden designs and I think they taste way better since the smoke cools down before reaching your mouth (also prevents tongue burn). I already got a super cheap chinese one for 10 bucks to try the long design and I liked it. But you can really taste the cheap plastic and colors that were used so I don't smoke it any more. I don't care if I look like a Lord Of The Rings LARPing fagot, I honestly think they taste better than the smaller ones. Also I bought a small selection of new tobacco: - Mac Baren Plum Cake 50g Pouch - Kentucky Bird 50g Pouch - Dan Tobacco Torben Dansk Blue Note 50g Pouch - W.O. Larsen Classic Unique (formerly Simply Unique) 5g sample - W.O. Larsen Indigo 5g sample - Dan Tobacco S.V.H. 5g sample Any experiences with those tobaccos?

Maybe I'm just not used to flake tobacco, but when I have Orlik Golden Sliced, I find a single full bowl lasts me on average 2.5 hours at a normal pace. Whereas ribbon/shag cut stuff like 965 or Lane 1Q tend to last 1.5h tops in the same pipe, if I really take my time. I assume the tobacco density accounts for the difference? I don't rub out the flakes all the way to individual strands or anything; I just break it up so it's reasonably easy to jam in the bowl.

Dead flame lamps and oil candles use paraffin oil because those burn slower and cooler, and paraffin oil has almost no smell, usually even less than wax candles. The difference is paraffin oil is made with hydrocarbon solids that are dissolved in solvents, mineral oil or something like that. Paraffin oil will sludge over time as the solvent dries up, it's not good to use in cold or hot blast lanterns like Madmartigan's there.
The problem is most kerosene has a flashpoint way too low, like 20ºC, and most paraffin oil has a flashpoint way too high, like 200ºC. For a cold blast lantern you want between 50ºC and 80ºC or so. It can be hard to find, I mix kerosene and paraffin oil and it seems to work well. You don't want a slow gluggy wick burning dim paraffin oil but you also don't want the stinky stink of pure kerosene, and with that low flashpoint if you drop the lantern it'll explode. When you drop an oil lantern with the correct fuel it should go out, not blow up.

I've been looking at Falcons recently and had a thought of how you could squeeze essentially something the length of a large churchwarden into a conventionally sized pipe. Essentially, rather than just the single stem, the pipe would look like an organ at each end; a central tube with two tubes in it and two tubes at the side. These would be sealed at either end with a plastic or metal attachment to ensure the smoke didn't escape while allowing easy access to the pipes for cleaning. As you can see; the smoke would travel down the central tube, back up the two other tubes towards the bowl and back down the stem; this would basically mean that the smoke would be traveling the length of three conventional pipes in the space of a single pipe, cooling the smoke and allowing it to dry out. The engineering would be pretty simple; at it's core, its basically three pipes soldered together, two pipes which slot into the connectors, room for any mouthpiece one would like a connector with which one could screw in a Falcon bowl. One could, potentially even make this out of briar or other woods, although aesthetically it'd be a bit unorthodox while this would, at least, stay close to the Falcon-esque look.

I can only compare it to cigarette tobacco because that’s all I have had access to, and I’d say it’s more mild than it. If it’s dried long enough (which is easy in CA) it can stay lighted and retain some flavor. All I can say is you have to like the taste of sage. I bet you could modify it like they do to pipe tobacco and add flavors.

Just ordered a tin of Ashton Artisan's Blend, and about to order a cob for /comfyout/ time.
Ordered the Ahston blend because I prefer the full body taste of a cigar, and apparently this is a pretty full tasting blend. Carter Hall and Prince Albert were getting boring.
Anyone have good recommendations for full body tasting tobaccos?
>>1172262 I've been smoking my pipe for ~5 months now without a tamper.
Real question, does it really improve your smoke?
Anonymous

>>1173482 The tamp is used to push the ember down to fresh tobacco. If you tamp you basically don't need to re-light nearly as much. Idk how you even smoke through a bowl without a tamper

>>1173482 Yes. Try the Lane 1-Q. It is one of the most if not the most popular by far for a reason.
A tamper will improve your smoking experience. A roofing nail with a flat large head or even a golfing tee works great, I see people using these often.

>>1173309 Purchase this stuff online. You can buy a decent Missouri Meerschaum cob on Amazon, tobacco at online sites as well. Neither one well require age verification and you can get both for less than $20. if you think what you're smoking now is fun wait until you get some decent stuff, your smoking experience will vastly improve!

>>1173482 I do not reccomend an aromatic like 1-Q nor a Latakia blend. You will probably be disappointed by trying to chase a cigar taste with cigar leaf blends, though some of them are good.
Non-aromatic Virginia, perique, Kentucky, burley blends in flake form if possible with a strength rating of medium and above would be my first suggestions.

>>1173966 Isn't there some way he could make a custom shank and glue it in? That part shouldn't be subject to huge amount of heat so he won't be inhaling resin fumes or anything. Just seal it with wax or whatever pipes are finished with, and it will be an awesome looking driftwood pipe.

Maybe it is the PG in my cheap tobacco. I had a similar reaction when I first tried out vaping, I heard PG can effect people. After a few days I stopped having a reaction, but I have since given up vaping completely.
Anyone smoke both cheap and luxury tobacco and have a comment?
Anonymous
Quoted By:
>>1174505 I only really smoke English blends from some small blenders, none of which use PG in their casings. I'd grab a tin of something which doesn't have any PG and some which does, smoke the two a few days apart and compare.
For where I live, the cheap stuff costs the same as the 'expensive' stuff, so I just buy the nice stuff. Haven't had any experience with OTC or cheaper tobacco aside from a few cigarettes when I was younger.

Anonymous
>>1174713 He would still have to cut down the shank so the mouthpiece would actually sit flush. The way it is now, the tenon would have to be long as shit if he were just to stuff a stem in the existing shank without any modification, because the shank is broken off at an angle. If you cut it straight, but still as far out as possible, you can put a normal stem in and it will look good.

Anonymous
>>1174723 Ah, I see. That would definitely look the best, but custom shaping the stem would be a nightmare.

>>1174729 It's be worth it though; the easiest way would be to carefully file or drill out space in the stem and put a wooden insert in, perhaps using plaster of paris as filler/strengthening. Then drill out the drawhole and the space for the mouthpiece. Pick a stem that fits the sides and perhaps sand it down to fit.
