No specific use in mind yet, I've already got my skinning gutting and filet knives as well as a couple of random "everyday" knives. But I don't have a bowie knife and I'm just interested in adding one to the collection. I guess I could use it for defense or baton with it if I want to turn myself into a living meme, but for now I just want a bowie knife because hey, why the hell not?

I suppose I could use it for butchering and skinning larger game as well if I ever move my hunting up from small game. Has anyone ever tried skinning a hog or whitetail with one?

It'll work for what you realistically use a knife for outside of baton chop suey. Game processing and whatnot will be fine.

I've got a similar Winchester one in my knife box (no finger grooves), and it cuts bottles fine.

Make your own. Grind out an old saw blade of suitable thickness while keeping it cool, get two slabs of some strong wood in the shape of the handle, gouge out a spot for the tang to fit into, do all the shaping, epoxy the two sides of the handle together and fill the cavity with epoxy, slide a copper ferrule or bolster over the tang and fit everything together. Total cost is like 10 dollars withstanding you had a loving father, thus the most basic of power tools. As for design, I would recommend a cross between a puukko and a schade old timer.

my experience was:

sheath wont hold the knife secure enough
it had one, simple stiching
it was made from one solid piece of leather. boom.

knife:
wooden handle wihtout any threatment. it looks like no one even sanded nor oiled it..
blade: dull. not easy too sharpen. rust.. alot of rust..

It'd be abnoxiously large for anything like that. If you're doing it right you only use a few small controlled cuts in the right places and then pull everything out/off. Did my last deer entirely with a leatherman.

R8 muh multi-tool. Dug it out of the basement of my parents’ place after they bought the house off an old man who wanted to move closer to his family. Not sure who’s it was originally, but it was kind of rusty and stuck when I found it. Gave it some elbow grease and WD-40 and now it’s my everyday carry. It has:

I went crazy this summer ordering Moras (6) because I got good prices with no shipping. I also like Opinel because the 100 year old design is still cool and you can keep them sharp. I carry the #6 and have a #8 in my bag.

The tollekniv is 72 dollars, but I got a 60 dollar giftcard to a chain that carries them for christmas, and the samiknife is 96 dollars if I buy it online, and 140 dollars if I buy it at the store i got a gift card at. I could also just grab the sami knife online and use the gift card on an axe or something else. What do I do?

I bought a Condor Hudson Bay Camp Knife and cut the top line down to turn it more into what I consider a French trade knife style. An 8" blade with a scandi grind suits me well for what I want. I also removed some steel from the choil??? so I could get more grip as it is quite a short handle. I also replaced the sheath which I didnt like.

My brother gave me a First Edge 5050 he was issued and doesn't really use/will get issued a new one. Any opinions on this knife? It's a big ole bitch, seems like it's a survival knife more than a general utility one.

Can you guys help a knife noob out in choosing a decent sharpening stone? Something that would be good for field use. Price range around $30-$40 dollars.

Look for a cheap set of diamond plates. I like to use them for sharpening, because low maintenance and I can get shaving sharp easily off them. Their also relatively light if you get the plastic backed ones. If you can only get one, get an approximately 1000 grit one at least 2 by 6 inch. It will be relatively effective at removing nicks, but also allow for a nice edge for innawoods use (shaving).

No. The standard one isn’t as pretty. They’re both on sale though if you look them up. $190 no shipping for standard (assuming in US) and $250 no shipping for limited edition, which has the sheath you see in the pic. Got gifted the limited edition, and should be here in the next coupl of days.

depends on your space requirement

get a water stone, water is not hard to find....I believe they should be soaked though before use (at least I always have)

or get a lansky kit for precise sharpening....comes with it's own case but kind of bulky....oil stones don't need any special treatment, but do have to pack a little oil (think travel shampoo bottle)

moras are easy to freehand sharpen; best compromise would probably be a medium sized arkansas stone (bring a little oil), that's what I last used with my mora and it went really easy

Yeah, I think that's better than why I want one. The historical aspect is just a bonus. In the details listed, it doesn't say how thick the steel is--at least, not from where I bought it. I assume they used L6 steel for the ones 12 odd years ago too. I don't know, I just like the idea behind the bowie knife, and like that Svord's version is made to last. I'm going to find every reason to use it that I can.

I assume you don't have a picture/not the right device/don't want to post it, which is cool. Thanks for indulging me.

I had a HD companion, I did use it for batoning just to see if it could do it. HOWEVER! I only batoned three inch or smaller logs, and it was midsummer. But it worked out well. I smashed the very tip with the stick i was using to baton it with. Didn't damage it. I don't recommend batoning since wood processing is much easier/faster with an axe/hatchet. But you do your own thing.

$50 is a big range
if you're going to spend up to $100, get a Griptilian ($102 on amazon currently); otherwise a Delica or Endura would be upper spydie tier, for a bit less

if you want a fixed blade, I know a lot of people like their ESEE 3's, also about $100....there's a knock off for $23 which is on my list; I've been carrying a $6 izula knock off for almost a year now and haven't had a problem with it

Just cause it's made in Asia, doesn't mean it's gonna be shit. A lot of the top tier budget knives are made not in the U.S., but in places like Taiwan and even China now a days. companies like Spyderco, Kershaw, etc can afford to have their lower stuff made overseas, still spend a little extra for QC to be done.
