Who on /out/ hunts? If so, what? What do you use?
I just got into it, and plan on hunting just about everything I can. I use a bow/rifle for deer. I also use a small caliber for small animals. I plan on using a shotgun for duck, geese, etc.
Also, general hunting/trapping thread.

Don't hunt, but work at a hunting store, so I know more about it than I care to. The Ruger American is a good rifle in that price range, for sure, but make sure you also look at some of the lower end savage and weatherby rifles. .30-06, though, is not a great hunting cartridge. If the only big game you're going after is deer, look at a .243Win or .270WSM. For larger game, then you have to start looking at things like .300WM depending on the range you expect to shoot at.

For waterfowl, look at some of Stoeger's semi-autos, or a mossberg pump.

Longer than it needs to be with modern powders, thus heavier, longer rifle action than needed. .300 win mag is the same length, but ~25% more powerful. Also, it uses a relatively heavy bullet, which means low velocities and harder to compensate for drop.

But it does have the advantage of being super common, so you'll always have a decent selection at any store. Lots of people use it, and at the end of the day, it'll put a hole in a deer, but it wouldn't be my first choice.

.30-06 is great hunting cartridge. Be it deer or elk or anything else trumping around in the woods. Its prolific and you'll find it even though the gun grabbers cause the great scare and people panic buy.

For waterfowl go with you standard mossberg pump. They have a great deal going on right now with their Mossberg 535 combo. It comes with a waterfowl barrel and turkey barrel. Damn good gun.

Hunt honorably and remember one shot one kill or it's just inhumane.

I honestly wouldn't say that's a bad thing if you just want one gun that can take out any large game in North America and are shooting at medium ranges.

Consider getting guns in specialized rounds if you become an avid hunter. Many will agree that .30-06 is a fine and versatile round for a casual hunter in North America.

The last few deer taken from hunting partners have been 1 shot drops. I personally am a savage guy when it comes to rifles but I heard from a friend who owns the lower model (Axis) that the trigger isnt great that it has a heavy pull.

I currently have a .308 savage 99c for deer and moose and am planning on getting a Marlin 3030 soon for the same purposes. I would recommend any .22 bolt action, they come fairly cheap and most are pretty accurate.

I do feel remorse. That's why I practice to take them out on the first shot as much as possible.

The amount of free-range game I get happens to outweigh the remorse I feel.

The deer also suffers a lot more when being eaten by a predator than by by being shot. A lot more prey animals die from predators than from old age and if we don't hunt them, more of them will just be ripped apart by wolves and cougars.

308 For inna bush. Peep sights. (top rifle, ruger scout with a stainless barrel)

.22 for grouse, rabbit, smaller shit.

I have a .223 for coyote but that's for pest control.

Well thats retarded. A food animal that you are actually planning on eating isn't a pet. It should never be a pet. If you treat it like a pet your just setting yourself up for emotional issues when you harvest it.

There has to be some emotional disconnect present between livestock and the farmer/rancher, or else they'd get ptsd horribly when slaughter-time comes around.

Depending on how you were raised a hunter either goes the route of feeling some remorse for the animal they harvested or just turning off that part of their brain.

Upland game and waterfowl hunter here. I use my browning citori for dove, pheasant and quail and my 870 express for duck. The 870 is the best shotgun you can get for the price and is practically indestructible.

Chickens are domesticated dinosaurs with feathers and beady little eyes, waiting for that day when they can eat humans again. They die all the time in the dumbest ways. You would feel sorry for them but when you watch them... it is almost like watching a bug.... no intelligence just kinda react to environment. Quail and ducks can at least fly the hell away.

Any animal would eat the fuck out of you and feel no remorse about it. Why are you giving them a free pass?

Think about it next time your cat tears a baby rabbit in half, or a turtle eats a baby duck off the top of a lake. Or dogs tear apart baby sheep at your neighbors farm, or when a bear is busy ripping out your throat.

If you feel remorse for killing something, just remember that you are the ONLY thing out there that feels that way. Everything else just 'reacts naturally' ie murders with its teeth.

Source: My cat brought a baby bird through the kitty door yesterday morning. It had already ripped off one of its wings. I couldn't catch it because it was hiding behind my dresser and I had to go to work- of course it was dead back there when I got back. 1 or 2 shotting any animal is way nicer than anything that would normally happen to it. You could almost say you are doing it a favor by sparing it a horrible 'natural' death by teeth or starvation.

I only have a ruger 10/22 for small game that my cat would kill anyway.

Planning on a lever action 30-06 for deer and a little 410 for birds. Not sure about bigger shotguns.

I admire your enthusiasm. Avoid my mistake and make a 12 gauge shotgun your first priority. It is extremely flexible and can take everything from dove to deer.

I like .30-06 a lot. My family has used it for decades. Thanks to the cartridge capacity and ubiquitous .308 projectile, it is really flexible if you reload.

But if you're just looking for a good deer gun to shoot a few times a year, I'd look at .270, .25-06, or even 6.5 Swede. They all have plenty of knockdown power for even large deer (elk might be pushing it) with less recoil and a flatter trajectory.

5. WAIT 10 minutes. THIS IS THE HARDEST PART. Just focus on #4. This gives the animal time to die, rather than panicking and running into thick brush when you come up on him.
6. If your animal has been hit and run into the brush, stand in the spot you estimate it to have been standing when you fired. Walk in a slow, deliberate spiral until you pick up a blood trail.

.410 works for rabbits and maybe squirrel but you'd have to be fucking Annie Oakley to use it reliably for wing shooting.
