Looking into a new tent, REI has this for a little over $260. Comes in at a little over 3 lbs.

Wondering if anons have experience with this particular tent or other lightweight tents in the $250-300 range.

This. Most of the bulkiness is the framing. Also, if you have a waterproofing spray, you can leave the rain flap behind, but only if the design doesn't have a big ass screen on the top.

tried the UL 2 and it was friggin perfect for just one big person (6'2" 240lbs). Packs down to size of a nalgine bottle and super light.

Only downside is the material is very thin (obviously) and you should always have a patch kit handy.

Anyone got any experience with the Hilleberg Akto? I'm looking for a good 4 season solo tent because I'd like to go off trailing more soon and I don't think my Lunar Solo will cut it under more demanding circumstances.

i've been doin some research on one-man tents myself - i have a kelty gunnison 2.1 which is an awesome tent and not super heavy for a 2-3 person tent.

do you find that the light colored silnylon doesn't give you enough privacy? i saw a review on youtube that mentioned that you can kinda see through it

also the only other hang-up i have about it is that in some reviews there was mention of the tent sagging on the foot/head area during rain/snow. did you notice that? did the guyout points provide enough stability/the right shape to prevent this?

it seems like a lot of people don't get a good pitch on this tent, from what i've seen it seems like the instructions they provide don't actually yield a fully taut pitch.

You do kinda see through it and this and the grey synthetic fabric was probably one of the only cons about it, not for privacy reasons but because (and this might sound really retarded) it isn't comfy. It's the same feeling I get with a synthetic fleece vs a classic wool sweater, I like feeling comfy when going /out/ so that kinda bothered me sometimes.

The pitch on this tent is easy to learn but hard to master, it does take a few tries to get it just right. That being said the few times I did get heavy rains at night I never had a problem with sagging whatsoever.

I'm 5'10", so manlet but not super tiny, what is the best single or double person tent, probably double, that I could fit in with my pack and potentially a mid sized dog. Even in the middle of nowhere I'm paranoid of people finding my shit while asleep and stealing it, or other animals. Anything lightweight/backpackable?

best is going to be budget dependent, but there are a ton of 4-5 lb backpacking double tents available for $100-200. i recommend finding one that's free standing and has 2 doors. i have a marmot ajax 2 that's about 95% mesh, which i love.

fine. it all fits easily back into it's stuff sack and crushes down inside my pack well. i strap the poles on the outside of my pack because i'm too lazy to worry about protecting them from bending if i pack them inside. assembles in <90 seconds. weighs a bit above 4.5 lbs, iirc. i think i paid $150 at sierra trading post.

Had this backpacking extensively in the sierras during the summer. i had the two person tent, big agnes also has the one person but i cant speak for that. The size it seemed like a really big one person or a very small two. Im 5'7 so i didnt have much trouble but if youre 6'0 or up i can imagine you feeling cramped.
Found that adjusting the guide lines to tension the rain fly very finicky, many times water wicked into the tent. never by the door where i put my head but by my feet (it was manageable just annoying). The guidelines are also very thin so bring pcord or something. The fabric is also very thin (ultra-lite sit) so if you know you are rough on your shit then this isnt a good tent, unless ultra light is your main buying point. Id perfer something more heavy if it means something more durable. I will say though when im tired hiking climbing into my tent im a fucking neaderthal.

Yeah, Hilleberg is damn expensive but extremely well made and they'll last a lifetime. If I'm going to get a 4 season solo tent I might as well get the best one out there.

I'm about your size probably, and have been concerned about reviews mentioning that the UL series tents are pretty delicate.

If you were to buy something right now with, let's say, up to $400 to spend, would you look into something a little tougher that integrates trekking poles?

I've got the 2 man, use it as a 1 man, and like it a lot. Just enough space for me and my gear and dog to be comfy, super light, easy to set up, and keeps the bugs and rain out. That's all I really need out of a tent. The material is thin but I'm careful with my gear and it's lasted me a year so far with no signs of wear.
