Do you take a lot of pictures and videos when you are /out/ ?

My brothers always takes pictures, but I just live in the moment and never take any photos while i'm /out/

I get it, some people want a picture to remember the moment forever., Am I fucking up?

different strokes for different folks. i tend to take lots of pics, but i use a little point and shoot and spend almost no time on composition, and pick out the gems when i get home. but that's just my preference. some people like to take lots of time composing their photos, some like to walk with a selfie stick, and some like to take no pics. but as long as they're not affecting my experience i couldn't care less what makes someone else happy.

My mom had MS, and since she couldn't go out I always did take some pics for her. She has passed away some years ago, but I still bring my camera and take many pics.

I'm a big picture taker. I wish I had a fancier camera, but I get by with an old mirrorless I recently got.
I also like to live in the moment, but it's usually with the pictures I take that I relive it. The pictures tell a story, since they usually chronograph what happened that day.

For example, this picture was taken one morning when I was in Alaska. I had lugged an inflatable kayak up a mountain to a crater lake, where I then slept the night and got to enjoy the stars. A great memory, and pictures that bring me back to then are priceless.

Yes, I take 360 degree Google Street View photos.

If you go into Google Maps and drag the little yellow man, the blue lines are taken with a Google car. But the blue dots are taken by a community member. It is a really cool way to experience remote locations /out/ there when you are stuck at home/work. I like to contribute to that.

I take photos. There are plenty of places I've been that I remember without photos, but having a photo from a really amazing moment is something that I value a lot.

In my room, I have a dozen or so posted on the walls. If I'm sick of whatever I'm doing on my computer, I just spin my chair around and remember the adventures the photos are from.

In all seriousness, I'm open to sharing photos with friends and senpai when I'm telling the story. It's different letting anyone sit on their ass and see (albeit very limited) what used to be something you had to get /out/ to experience. It may sound a bit corny, but I would want people to get out and find their own spots to share.

here's what you do:

get an old film camera. bring ONE roll of film (30 ish pics). that's it. the grain and slightly muted temperature of the images are max comfy. and the fact that each picture is not just one of maybe twenty that were just of that object, and that it actually cost money to take.

Never, I'm very selfish about /out/ escapades. I keep it in my head, because showing other people photos doesn't really communicate the whole experience. I can go back there in my mind and remember the cold, the smell, the ache, and the view.

For family purposes my wife takes loads of photos so they aren't left wondering what it was like.

Yeah I understand. It does sort of take away the feeling of adventure when someone can just view the same spot and look around digitally.

At the same time I like using it to experience places I will probably never get to go to. There is a lot of insanely beautiful mountains in Iran for example.

I take pictures but I try not to let the picture-taking distract me from living in the moment. One time I was on Isle Royale and saw a moose across a lake- by the time I had gotten my phone out and took a decent picture it had just about walked out of sight. I kinda regretted bothering with the pictures since they turned out shitty anyway. Pictures are fine overall, they're really fun to look back on. I just can't stand it when the people I'm with take 30 minute breaks from the hike just for shitty selfies or new facebook profile pics

I do. I try to restrict myself from taking too many photos, as once I've started I just can't get enough of it. Sometimes if I want to keep a memory really bad, I take a photo of it, and the photo is all I need to access through the memory the feeling of what it was to be there in a certain point before the present. As the one in pic related, this low quality photo of a passage with the waves behind the terrace bring me back in the windy and rainy October day last year at a town on the other side of the country.

I'm a lot like you, but I try and force myself to take at least a couple pictures of the cooler spots on my trips, and pictures of my buds as well. I don't really even look at them until later usually, but it's nice when the weather is shit or I'm really busy to look through pictures of fun /out/ stuff I've done. Also, posting nature photos on instagram is a great way to get girls to think you're cool, which I know is a really shallow reason to do it, but I'm a total autist so it's just about the only way for me to get laid.

I take a lot of pictures because for me it adds something different to /out/ that I'd struggle to get otherwise. When I'm taking photos I focus on details I usually wouldn't, but also it gives me an excuse besides simply stopping to explore, observe and take some time to make the most of my surroundings.

Yeah, I take pictures of everything. I love going back through my albums and reliving the experience. I have a tiny camera so it's easy, and I don't spend my time looking through the lens. I just take it out every so often and snap a shot. I'm always looking around and pictures never detract. If I'm going somewhere just to take pictures, that's different.

Myself and significant other never take photos.
Reason 1: We dont want to share our experience with others through photos that cannot grasp anything but colour. We tell them stories, sure, but also if they want to see it, they ought to go out there themselves and experience it in their own ways.
Reason 2: Whenever I look back on the photo I will be displeased with the photo. The photo never does any justice and ruins your beautiful vivid memory and you should always give more respect to your memory, it pays off.

I really regret not taking photos on certain trips because I've had to go back and write down itineraries after the fact to remember what I actually did. No, I don't have a horrible memory, I just do a lot and care to remember the sequence. It's fun to put the pieces together just off memory, but if I miss something, I won't even be sure I forgot it.

That's just me. A photo only takes a second so I guess maybe I'm just young and used to the idea of snapping a shot of things I like. My photo albums are a tangible memory that I'm just proud to have and look through.

don't get me wrong, I'm not the type of person who likes instagram or thinks traveling to post pictures online is why you should travel. But I do think they act as good advertisements to get other people to think about going certain places, and I might start a blog to compile my photos just to provide a bit of insight for folks on what X might look like at a certain time of year, or whatever.

There's certainly something to be said for not posting every aspect of your life on social media, living in the moment, and really drinking in your surroundings, but photography is fun, easy, and keeps those hikes tangible for the rest of your life.

There's a fine line between being able to enjoy the outdoors while you're there, but also taking a few minutes to document it for later enjoyment. I really try hard not to be one of those instagramming faggots who is taking pictures every 30 seconds.

I know, lots of people love to shit on them for the design. But really, after having this thing for a while now, it's probably one of the best /out/ vehicles you could possibly own. Interior is bombproof, drivetrain is reliable, exterior is virtually rust/scuff proof with all the rubber/plastic cladding on the lower parts, and it's really easy to work on/modify if you need to. Shares parts with the 4Runner/Tacoma/Prado too, so no shortage of stuff if something needs replacing.

You can even sleep in the back in a pinch.

It was the perfect storm of bad luck. We had kayaked across a lake to have a picnic and then we were going to mosey on back during a full moon after it got dark but a storm picked up as we were waiting for sunset. In the boats we go trying to outrun the storm and I opened my dry bag to get my headlamp, my paddle went into the water, and as I was reaching for it a wave broadsided me and everything went in.

I don't take a lot of pictures, because I don't like to use my mobile phone when out and I use a throw away camera (don't know if this is the correct term in english). It only has a capacity for thirty photos or so. Makes you think about what to capture. It gives a nostalgic vibe but it sucks in the dark.

most large drug store locations will have them. further, they usually still develop, or at worst theres a camera store in your town/city that sells them.

35mm colour is easy to get developed honestly, though it is likely on it's way out. medium format on the other hand...

those are actually all digital now and have been for about 10 years. i'm sure it's possible to find the kind loaded with film but i haven't seen one in yonks. the digital ones are still "disposable" (i.e. perpetually recycled) but they have cheep digital sensors that take subpar pics shockingly similar to the cheep optics and film the analog ones used to use. anyway, they still make and sell them and they just take the photos off them via USB (or maybe some proprietary format) and print the pics the same way any other digital prints are done, at any pharmacy, camera shop, Staples/Officeworks/etc, or department store.

just buy a mirrorless point-and-shoot for a hundred bucks and call it a day.

i like to take pics on the occasion, but try not to slow down the trip, so i find i only tend take photos when i have my camera on my belt or around my neck. IMO the presence of a camera should not change what happens at all on the trip, apart from maybe 1 stop for a group photo, but not stopping and starting every 5 minutes or so.

Anyone else do this? I hate the feeling that I'm only taking pictures to show other people what a fun time I had. It's much more satisfying going over them by myself if I'm feeling blue.
