Any substitute for lure wire? Looking to make some baits but having a devil of a time finding lure wire, I don't buy things online so I'm looking for substitutes.

Prob fishes better than the Carbon color. Bass like red and the chartreuse/silver is similar to big minnows. Personally I'd opt for the Silver or Yellow perch.

There is this fishing group on FB called poor man's aqueduct fishing and they are absolute cancer.

I don't know why I didn't think of this, I have spools and spools of it at work, and the getting time is getting close. Forums are great and much better. FB is completely shit. The only fb group I’m in is the halibut derby for the contest and a buy/sell fishing group so I can get good deals on used shit when I need them. Otherwise, I mostly look through forums for local fishing. I’m also socal anon and I’m mostly looking through scsurffishjng and also sdfish ( even though I’m like 1 hr and 30 min away from sd). Fishingnetwork is not bad but it is really spread out in too many category so each subforum is really slow. Everytime someone link to an fb group on the forum, it’s a complete jackass full of shit. Also, Apollo Park is in fucking Downey so it would get raped by mexicans as soon as there is any stocking. They even travels to ponds in nicer areas in OC to rape them if there is stocking.

well the first reason is that the baits are huge and need more materials, the second is it's a really niche market so there isn't a ton of mass production, and the people buying it need exactly that so a lack of competition can drive up the prices, and thirdly all of fishing is expensive

I'm sad, it's that time of year where I have to stop fishing saltwater because it's too cold and windy and my boat is too small/engine is too old so I'd probably die if I tried to go where the fish are. On a completely unrelated note, would it be illegal to release a fish up above a small spillway? Esox species are found on the main river but not up above the dam. Would it be illegal to release them above it? It’s still technically the same waterway, but it’s also introducing them to new water. Is that illegal?

Completely hypothetical, it popped in my head while trying to sleep and was burning in my mind

You must be up north because I can't see dick when it's 2ft away. Which is honestly how I like it. I can catch fish in clear water, but my confidence goes down a whole lot. If I can see the fish cashing the lure I just about choke up.

I would much rather feel the fish thump it then set the hook than see the fish take the lure. It's almost like hunting.

Been fishing all my life but outside of a couple charters it was always creek chubs and panfish. Over the summer I picked up bass fishing and I'm not very good but it opened me up to fishing all sorts of species and methods. Pic related is my biggest bass to date, but I'm having lots of fun learning different baits and lures and for different seasons and weathers and fish. I have some tackle and equipment questions though. I've got

>4'1" Spincaster
>5'10" Spinning with three #30's
>6'6" Spinning #50
>8' Spinning Surf #80
>11' Fly

Are there any other rods I should have?

Also, I need to buy some fly line and tackle for my fly rod. Any suggestions for a newbie?

and also for bass tackle, get a 7' heavy memecasting rod, put on a a silver max and 40 pound braid, and buy some lures called "scum frogs" to pull through lilly pads and green goopy muck. crank the drag to max, and you will need to wait a full second after a take, then set the hook like you're trying to rip him out of the water and land him at your feet. then reel in your 2 pound bass and 5 pounds of scum and take a picture, its my favorite way to bass fish

I have a Cortland Rimfly reel, its old but it's in nice shape and was gifted to me. I have 6# mono backing with nothing past that and no lures for it.

okay, what im going to reccomend is you get some actual dacron backing (20 pound, whatever is cheap) and some air cel fly line to match your rod. look at the number on your rod (it should say something along the lines of "line size: X" or "x wt line" (x representing a number, it might also have two numbers like 5/6 or 7/8, if it has two numbers try to match the higher one but don't exceed it) and that is what you want your line to say on the box (air cel will be measured as wf X f, the only thing important to you at this stage is the number) so lets say your rod says "line size: 5" you would want an air cel line that says "wf 5 f" or if it said "6/7 wt line" i would reccomend you put wf 7 f line on it. all those letters do mean things but at this stage knowing what isn't important, and you can learn that through simple google searches. as for flies i would reccomend and other gear i have to know more about your rod, what kind of fish are around you, and how you plan to use it.

thanks, and same. just out of curiosity i decided to see how long it took me to tie and it came out as about 6 minutes and 30 seconds, which i'm happy with considering i saw a foam bee pattern that took the guy more than double that long to tie between sculpting the foam, and tying everything in. i've been looking for an easy bee pattern that looked better than a yellow piece of foam with black lines sharpied on but was easier than sculpting foam for a while, and i think that is it.

Plus I do use Gamakatsu worm/finesse hooks only because I don’t like how VMC hooks have the 3 degree turned point and that TroKar hooks are expensive as fuck. Either way I do still like some Japanese gear, just not the $800 jerkbaits and crankbaits

Yea the nip still makes the most impressive stuff. Rapala has been really hit or miss lately but certain stuff like the x rap line is still fine but still under or equal at most to the japanese equivalent. American soft plastic are still okay and cheap and durable while japanese’s soft plastic are more expensive and have better performance but get ripped up more because they are typically softer.

Aside from the big corp stuff, I do enjoy more simpler types of lures and tackle such as soft plastic and jig head made from smaller local company. They are made for local regional fishing so they have designs, action, and color that works well for the region.

despite having no chenielle those are not bad. probably clouser minnows would be a good option. you already have krystal flash, a vice, and tools. you just need some decent hooks for them and some dumbell eyes and you can hunt smallies. get some medium, round, brown rubber legs and you can tie my backwards bug, too (pic related, you can see it hanging out of its mouth)

How the hell are you supposed to nose hook flukes?

I tried it yesterday for about an hour, and while I caught a few fish doing it, I had about 3 lures rip out of the hook and fly off on casts. One of them never even had a fish caught on it.

Same here. I think they hit the tail. I got a nice trout on my first cast with a muddler minnow though. Usually If I'm fly fishing I'm either using dry flies because 80%of the fun in fly fishing is watching something take it off the surface. Either that or fishing a dropper off a big stonefly or hopper as an indicator. My three biggest trout came from a stonefly dry with a bead head prince as a dropper . Two on the prince and one on the dry.

no problem. people helping me is how i got in to fly fishing, so i figure it's only reasonable to pay it forward. some other worthwhile begginer flies might be foam beetles (2mm black craft foam, peacock herl, rubberlegs, and optionally some bright egg yarn just to make a high vis spot on the back) and hoppers (two tone foam, rubberlegs, elk hair) and if you go for the egg yarn hot spots on the beetles you could also get some egg hooks and tie some egg flies which are easy enough

those biots and black dubbing could also transfer over to stonefly nymphs and with the hackle and elk hair even stimulators. then you could also tie a fly called a peacock caddis with just elk hair and peacock herl, get some pheasant tails and suddenly pheasant tail nymphs are on the table, or some adams grey dubbing and you can tie what is basically an adams with grizzly hackle and the adams dubbing, which scale well all the way down to a size 20. fly fishing, and especailly fly tying is a slippery slope, in 2 posts i told you about $70 worth of materials (though 30-40 dollars of that is a grizzly saddle)

oh also while parachutes are tricky a parachute adams is easier than a normal one, and if you ever tie squirmy wormies get some dubbing to match the colour (red dubbing for red squirmies, pink for pink, etc) because the thread will cut in to the material and weaken it, but the dubbing will serve to increase the diameter of the thread and make the fly more durable

but yeah im in north east ohio, the nearest wild trout that aren't a heavily threatened species of brook trout with only 5 breeding populations in the whole state are well over 100 miles away, so i settle for a 50 mile drive for steelhead that are stocked

i live in northeast ohio but sometimes my family goes to the outerbanks of northcarolina and i fish like every other day while i'm down there (because every day i go fishing i leave at like 6 am and stay till like 3 in the morning to catch stingrays and sharks at night so i spend the majority of the day after sleeping, and the other half of it spending time with family and stuff) but yeah in the outerbanks there is a size and bag limit on blue crabs. it 50 crabs per person (which i think is high, i think the population of big crabs would be better if the limit was cut in half, because seriously, who can eat 25 crabs in a sitting) and 5 inches wide from point to point. there were definately some 3 inch crabs in their cooler.

I find midges to be fairly easy to tie in comparison to some more complicated dries. Zebra midges are some of my favorites cuz I can fill up my nymph box fairly quickly with a nice variety of color patterns.

Shore or boat?

For shore, jigging for walleye in tribs when theyre running through the winter and early spring, pink jigs with chartreuse 3" mister twisters is prime. Im sw ontario and fish the thames which is a st clair trib, i think ive only been out once or twice jigging where it didn't produce a Walt or 2. Ive found that casting in the great lakes isnt that productive, youll have better luck in the rivers. I also like the scenery on the river banks more than the open water so thats a plus. Youll catch bass and pike casting and retrieving pretty much any lure just switch it up every 15 casts or so. Make sure to pay attention to the structure of the water your fishing in, makes a huge difference

For downrigging from a boat, go our till its abour 60'deep and set your rigs 20 and 40' deep, use watermelon, blueberry or greasy chicken colours and you will get some eventually. Mark your location to go back at another day and keep trying others till you have a good collection of spots to go to

Forgot to mention, get a spin setup. Casting reels are good but theres a learning curve, spins are easy to learn and way more versatile

Jigging requires a somewhat stiff rod to feel out the movement of your rig but any one will get you started

Honestly your best to find someone to go out with. I could write tips all day but having someone to point out what your doing wrong or right or to show you how to read the water, feel the lure or bait moving through your rod ect its tough to learn

You could always just setup a weight with a hook and a worm, youll get bass, suckers and the odd walleye that way and you just have to get your hook in the water and wait

Having a boat helps. The important thing is access to deep water. The fish will be deep when it's cold, but still come up shallow to feed on the warm days. They won't travel far though, so if you have a big shallow flat they'll only come up on the sides that are closest to the deep water. Try to hit structure that's close to deep water. And use search baits. The fish won't always be next to structure and me be swimmin around looking for food (when it's a relatively warm day).

What is good from the shore this weather beside surf perches. I still haven't gotten much surf perch at all though. I've been hitting the rock jetty because I heard halibuts goes a bit deeper and stay close to structure during colder season but I haven't gotten anything. No calico/spotty yet either but those jetties are typically heavily pressured. I miss spring/summer already.

Nah man yamamoto plastics definitely have a special acution that western plastics don't. Shouldn't matter much on a jig, but just plain Texas rigged it does. It's not always needed but when the fish won't bite a senko will do the trick.

There’s shit in the OP Pastebin and Imgur. Are you trying to do fresh or salt? Either way don’t go crazy at first because you will probably buy a ton of shit that you will never use. If you’re doing freshwater, spend $70-$100 on a rod+reel combo and it will be something that will work well until you figure out what you really like and get more in the future. For saltwater, maybe $100-$150 because you want something a little more corrosion resistant.

Honestly you could order all the stuff online, but you might be better off going to a local tackle place. At least see what they reccommend to start and if you find the right sizes you could order some of it later. Or go to Bass Pro in Dania or at Dolphin Mall and find somebody who knows what they’re talking about. But make sure you ask one of the guys behind the reel counter, not some guy stocking.

Eventually both. I have a lake in my backyard that's stocked with Largemouth, and I'm about 2 miles out from the beach but a little further out from piers (there's one in Lake Worth and another in Deerfield Beach).

I haven't decided on which type of fishing I want to start out with, but freshwater seems more convenient while saltwater seems more edible.

I used to do a lot of freshwater fishing when I was a kid (11-15) up north, but saltwater is a new animal and I'm not 100% familiar with all the freshwater fish here.

Ideally, I'm looking to get a good deal on stuff since I have a lot of gear to buy (everything), which is why I'm looking for online sales. Heard Bass Pro is pretty overpriced.

spool it with about 500 yards of #100 power pro, then fill in the rest with #60 mono (should be about 250 yards) tie on a #100 or #200 leader, and a huge snap swivel. if you are king rigging put on a king rig and if you are shark fishing, use some number 15 single strand american fishing wire (240 pound test) and a similarly strong barrel swivel, haywire twist on the barrel swivel, haywire twist on a 16/0 circle hook, hook that in to a 10-15 inch bluefish, use some #10 mono to tie a 1 or 2 pound chunk of brick to the fish (not the hook, the bait, so that if something steals your bait you lose the weight too and it lets you know that you are baitless) paddle it out about 200 yards with a kayak, drop it in the water, turn on the clicker and set the drag just barely tight enough that the waves dont pull line, crack open a beer, and wait.

If you’re doing pier fishing, that’s different. Go to Bass Pro and get a Penn in whatever size they think you will need. Go to the pier and see what people are using. Don’t buy a ton of tackle you won’t touch because somebody in New Jersey on Youtube said it works for them up there.

Question regarding the fg knot
Does running the knot through the guides multiple times weakened the rod? I lost a x rap saltwater when my fg knot came undone. However, the knot was tied for a while and could have been weakened over time after a while. So was that the cause? Or was it simply a mistake on my part in tying the knot? Does putting super glue on the knot help or it it just a meme?

Superglue might keep the tag from coming undone but if you’re running it through the guides a bunch of times it will probably crack the clue off quick anyway.

It rained a good bit this week and the little fork of the river near my house is up about 5ft and stained with mud. When that happens there's a eddy right passed a narrow channel that's full of pic related. Caught 8, 21lbs, last night. Meat went in the freezer.

An interesting fact is that their stomachs were full of earthworms. I was using chicken liver, but gonna use worms next time.

Being relatively far North in Washington I just cant see our state producing a global sportfishing record for Catfish. In the South the record is like 7lbs. Does any one else think this might be a case of a Game Department that never handles catfish being unable to differentiate between a Channel Catfish and a Brown Bullhead?

I cant even picture an 11lb Brown Bullhead, and am currently waiting on the department to send me any documentation that might have on the record, especially photos.

How important is it really to match the hatch?

Like, I can understand matching the basic shape and size, but is color really that important? If bass are blowing up on shad in the shallows, and I run a firetiger lipless through the boils, will the fish really look at it and go “That’s not a shad, I want shad, reeeeeeeeee!”, and just ignore it? That seems kinda unlikely to me.

Its impossible for a single recreational angler to accomplish the removal of all carp from a pond.

Commercial and State Gill netting operations on small lakes only accomplished in decreasing the average size, and increasing the total number of carp over a 10 year project.

You'd have to drain the pond completely to have any assurance they are all dead.

A bow is only effective for certain sizes. I'll admit you can bag insane amounts of carp during the spawn as they pretty much ignore everything around them trying to get dem eggies. But at that point, even if you killed every carp in the spawn, you'd still have to deal with the millions of eggs that are now distributed throughout the lake.

Stay mad plebboy. The small pond is only a few acres and I haven't seen ANY since the 1st Genocide. As for the bigger (still small) lake....it was mostly dredged recently to re-build the dam on the one side. We saved the larger bass/catfish/good number of crappie/bluegills.....left the remaining carp to die. So....yea it def can be done.

Bluegill and otheir panfish are actually probably one of the best controllers of Carp populations due to their predation of Carp Eggs, and Carp Fry.

Its within the realm of posibility that Bass and Bluegill "could" eat every single member of multiple year classes of carp, but its improbable desu. They can control them like they do in most lakes. But complete extermination is unlikely. As predation rates are based on prey density.

This is why in healthy lakes, despite carp being present there are healthy populations of Native Fish. The only reason for booms in carp population are due to environmental factors that prevent the predation of Carp in the younger year classes.

Turbidity and water quality factors determine how well a carp population is controlled.

High turbidity = Reduced Predation By Sight Feeders like Panfish and Bass
Bad Water Quality = Dead intolerant species. IE Bass and Bluegill.

I'm not disputing that population reductions of carp are impossible, but complete elimination merely using recreational angling and native predators isnt going to exterminate them.

Lakes where carp are not the dominate species are actually typically better for the Carp Fisherman, as this means that the population is controlled, and the pond isnt full of starving 5lb carp.

Studies on Rainbow trout show that not only are they able to pass it through the digestive track, but they are also able to derive nutrition and grow on it.

Its not that big of a deal though desu. Alternatives for corn can be found for nearly as cheap.

As far as trout, visibility is a big thing. I like sight fishing for trout in clear water, but once I only brought my basics fly box and I kept throwing the same dry that was as close as I could get you what was hatching, it would rise up, look at it, and turn around. Similarly, I was fishing for steelhead in clear water with a bright rapala. The same color was killing them the week before when the water was stained. I switched to a natural shad color and third cast I had one on. So clear water may not always be your friend. That being said, I've caught fish with out of season bait. At least have something for everything, but you don't need ten sizes for each color, 500 colors, a huge file cabinet full of tackle. You catch more fish if you go fishing then you do in the line at Cabela's

Spoon flies kind of imitate small crabs. You tie a set of dumbbell eyes on it and it lands hook point up and glides under the surface in a swaying motion. Redfish go crazy for em.

no problem, i took my best guesses. and something that i've always liked doing is taking of the treble hook on a kastmaster and putting on a small soft plastic, like a little grub. also i kinda fucked up with the flukes, i thought those were the tiny flukes, which in that colour and size they mimic perfectly a glass minnow.

I've had my cheapo kayak for 2yrs now. I basically use it to access bank spots I wouldn't otherwise be able to get to. For me, I dont actually fish in it that much in the kayak. But now I want a small fishing boat and it would make the kayak obsolete to me, except for some small rivers when the water is low. But solo camping trips are fun on the river so there's always that.

You can buy a jon boat for fairly cheap. Look up duck boats too cuz those are easy to convert to a fishing boat and are usually cheap.
