The first 2 days on a trip, I'll eat steak with melted cheese on top, bell peppers, tomatoes and fresh fruit.
After that, rice and beans, pasta, smoked sausage, dried veggies, oats, cucumbers, lentils and hard cheese.

I'd rather carry 4 more pounds for a few days than eat shitty.

Everything I bring after that don't need to be cooled. I usually estimate how much food I'm gonna need and just pack it in plastic bags.

When we're canoe camping for several days where weight and trash carryout isn't an issue, we make "Dump" chili. So called because you just open up a bunch of cans and dump them into a pot. We usually wait until the 3rd night when everyone's supply of fresh food is exhausted and we're in need of a hot hearty meal, high in calories.

Dump Chili

1 - 14.5 oz can or foil pak of precooked Ground Beef
1 - 15 oz can of Luck's Pinto Beans
1 - 15 oz can of Luck's Black Beans
2 - 12 oz bottles of V8 juice
1 - 14.5 oz can of Hunt's Fire Roasted Tomatoes (diced)
1 - package of Chili - O seasoning mix w/ onion

Dump everything into a 4 qt pot.
Add an additional 12 to 24 oz of water
Stir well and bring to a boil
Reduce heat and simmer at least 15 minutes

Serves 4

You can also add a can of whole kernal corn if you like and if you prefer spicy chili, add a small can of chipotle peppers (de-seeded)

Yeeeeesh, we put everything in roll top waterproof bags and place those inside Duluth packsacks for puncture resistance and ease of carrying. Portaging is then just a matter of beaching the canoe, slinging the pack onto your back & throwing the tumpline across your forehead and off you go.

Most of our travels take place on rivers, not lakes. We feed everything burnable to the campfire. Cans are washed or burned out, then flattened with the back of an ax and placed in a plastic garbage bag for transport to our take out point. In all honesty though, it wouldn't be THAT big of a deal to sink steel cans to the bottom of a deep lake. They wouldn't be seen, would eventually biodegrade and might even provide structure / homes for small fish.

Frozen meat thaws incredibly fast even when wrapped in multiple layers of newspaper. Frozen (then thawed) hot dogs should stay eatable quite a bit longer than fresh meat so don't worry about it. If you have more than one pack then maybe freeze and wrap them separately so they'll stay cool as long as possible.

Pshh. Wrap your favorite veggies and meat into a tin foil packet and cook it on the open flame.

My favorite is sliced potatoes, garlic, onion, salt, pepper and a sirloin patty. Make sure the tin foil is oiled or buttered or it will never come off.

To answer OP's question, basically every dinner I have on the trail is green lentils with a chicken stock cube mixed in; I'll embellish with wild onions or herbs when I can find 'em.
If I can get raw meat, I'll usually stew it because spit-roasting is such a pain in the ass. Salt, pepper, rosemary and onion; maybe some greens like nettles thrown in.
Making jerky by a campfire takes practice, but it's damn useful when you've got more meat than you can eat. I've never smoked anything.

If you don't have to ove yout camp often, you can easily build a hoven from steel/alluminium (also can) barrel and a bit of mud/clay. Just dig a hole under the barrel so it stands on its edges, but make sure you have enough space to build a fire. cover the barrel with wet mud/clay, so it will retain heat and reach higher temperatures. And that's it!

Iron Oxide is biodegradeable though so once the Iron in the steel begins to rust in you'll be left with iron oxide and carbon, both of which decompose over time and are not toxic.

For breakfast the first few days, I'll usually bring a bottle with pre-beaten eggs. I just pour it right into the pan and scramble. I also keep a sacred 5 strips of bacon to go with it.
But the best breakfast if you don't feel like cooking a lot (which you generally don't in the morning) is instant oatmeal. Apple cinnamon instant oatmeal tastes so goddamn amazing on those chilly mornings. Pair that with some instant coffee for even better results.

I have taken MRE's out with me in case of emergency, but they are not my primary source of food. The shits you take after eating them for a week feels like the second coming of Christ.

Having some compounds degradable doesnt make it ~biodegradable~.

There are other toxic compounds in it.

Also, biodegradable is degrading with the aid of microorganisms (not chemical degradation, which is how iron degrades)

Buy an inside skirt steak, the correct cut is important.
Have the butcher run it through the tenderizer, this isn't so important for the tenderness, but increases surface area for seasoning
Season with salt, pepper, onion, and garlic powders.
Roll it up and freeze it in foil in a ziplock.

cook it over a fire to your taste and cut it across the grain and serve in tortilla with cheese and avocado.

In the canoe I just carry a grill and dig a hole to build a fire in, two big logs on the edge hold the grill.

When I do this meal I usually serve beans and boil in bag rice with it and make a dutch oven cobbler for desert.

Anybody else here a vegetarian? I do mostly backpacking and usually make homemade larabars, which are super simple and great. I also tend to use a lot of couscous and lentils in my meals, generally mixed with dried peas/corn/beans/fruits/nuts.

Here's a recipe for some delicious and simple larabars:

¾ cup walnuts
1 cup Medjool dates, pitted
½ cup dried cinnamon sugar apples
½ tsp ground cinnamon
Pinch of sea salt

Or basically just add anything in with medjool dates and experiment until you find something good.

Well that is fine, and neither do I. I actually gain weight while I am out on an adventure. Weird that sitting at home on my computer all day I actually get skinnier. But on a cycling tour I eat like a pig, I just don't like sitting down and making a "full meal" more than once a day.

machaca seca, sold in Mexican markets. It is simple finely shredded beef jerkey, and is the fare of cowboy country in Mexico. It is versatile. A handfull in scrambled eggs is great, great base for soup especially if you have potatoes, you can fry it with onions and just eat it with tortillas, even snack on it strait up if you are lazy.

I have a method for cooking small/medium-sized fish quickly using only a stick and fire. seasonings are of course optional. Once you catch the fish you cut down from the top into and through its spine, but not all the ay through. Then you rip the head down and back towards the tail trying to bring all the innards with it. Clean the fish out so there's no innards left. This should be a very quick action taking like 5 seconds.

Then you skewer the fish with a thin stick or metal rods and roast it, skin, scales, and all over a fire. The skin and scales will dry out and become crisp. When you eat it you simply peel the skin back, add optional spices or whatever, and eat. The meat will easily fall from the bone while leaving the entire skeleton behind so there is no choking hazard normally caused when someone incorrectly fillets non-cooked fish. The entire process usually takes around 5 minutes for small fish if you have a nice flame. Thus, it is a lot faster than skinning, filleting then cooking.

For something more complex, you can add the fish meat to other dishes once it is cooked.

Cut some potatoes into 1/2 to 3/3 inch cubes. Cut up an onion. Cut up some celery. Season with seasoned salt or salt and pepper. Cook in skillet/cast iron whatever until almost done. Add a couple of tomatoes that have been cubed and some sliced squash (yellow or green), cook until the squash is done. You can add sliced up sausage if you want to. Works any time of day.

Also works well with dehydrated hash browns.

Pineapple juice and teriyaki makes good mop sauce for pork or chicken.

1 cup seeds (sunflower seeds, pumpkin seeds, or mixture of both)
2 teaspoons olive oil
Two pinches salt
1 cup Medjool dates, pitted
1 ½ tablespoons water

Coat the seeds in olive oil and salt, then toast them, and then puree the toasted seeds with the water and dates.

1 cup Medjool dates, pitted
½ cup peanut butter

To make any of these bars or others like them, puree them in a food processor until the mixture sticks together relatively well. and then just cut the bars out and throw them in the fridge to help them solidify, or vice versa if you so choose.
