He can SMELT iron, the temp needed here is around 1100°C to reduce the iron ore to iron. with this technology the iron never gets liquid but forms some sponge like material. This is the classic way used since the iron age and described in the vid above. Thats what he aims for.
To actually melt iron, you need 1560°C plus, something you only reach with large powered blast furnaces, and results in cast iron, which is useless for most tool applications.
