It requires an etool or small spade (which I highly recommend for long expeds anyway so you can bury your shit. This is a messy job but if you are staying in the same place for several days I highly recommend it.
(1) Dig a trench around half a metre (foot and a half) long, about a foot wide, and a foot deep, but it really depends on how good the soil is.
(2) Bridge the trench with sticks in the middle, and start mixing the excavated soil with water to make mud. Don't bother doing any of this if you don't have a river nearby or something like that.
(3) Build up the walls around one end of the pit.
(4) If the mud dries too slowly it will crumble, so start the fire in the non-built up pit as soon as the mud so firm that it won't collapse when the support sticks burn away.
The airflow sucks the fire through the chimney, which you can cook on top of. End result is an easy to maintain fire that burns very hot. There's also very little smoke, the fire isn't visible, and when time comes to move on, just stamp it back into dirt and throw the rest of the topsoil over it.
