In CA, it is legal to both conceal and open carry a loaded handgun while at your campsite. Just around your tent and whatnot.
It is however, illegal to get it there in any way on foot, and illegal to take it with you hiking.
Unless you are hunting and have all necessary equipment.
So it's almost necessary to camp close to your vehicle in order to legally get the handgun there, and safely store it while you hike.
Shit sucks, but better then getting some bear dick in your ass in the night.
