where do i start in going /out/

I'm trying to find something to do in 2018 and I figure camping/hiking would be a nice hobby. My problem is though I don't know where would I go to do all of this ? I live in Illinois and I've never been camping or hiking. sorry if this was a shitty thread

Go to southern Missouri or Kentucky dude, I just drove through the area and was sort of impressed by how scenic, at least Kentucky, was. Land Between the Lakes, maybe?

What about Starved Rock or whatever that one is in NW Illinois? My sister watched a kid commit sudoku when he jumped off a cliff over there.

There’s lots of forest preserves around the suburbs but if you want any actual terrain you gotta go south or west. There’s some cool shit when you get closer to the Mississippi R. or down south near KY.

Best bet is to get some roller skates and do the lakefront park in Chicago during the summer because the best scenery in the state of Illinois is the girls jogging.

But fuck the Midwest because that’s only a few months a year before they go get fat again in October.

Hey Illinois is Pretty good. Like that one guy said, Starved Rock is nice, and there's a lot of cool places down south. Giant City, Little Grand Canyon, Ferne Clyff. Look up Parks around you, or hit google maps and just find some not-obviously owned forest to explore in. It's real nice to light a fire and sleep under the stars.
