Thinking about getting a kukri for an all around camp knife. Can anyone recommend one for me? I'm willing to spend around $100 dollars or more as long as I know the thing will be rugged and will last me awhile. Bonus points if it's damascus

I’m guessing he’s implying kurkis are a meme, which they are to an extent, or about your price range. You’re probably not gonna get a pattern-weld steel knife of that size for under $100 USD. But, you can still get a decent kukri for that price and they’re definitely useful. They’re not so much a general-purpose knife so much as they are a machete/hatchet hybrid. Still plenty of utility there, but you’re gonna want a smaller pocket knife for some jobs. You can get a hold of a military-style kukri from the manufacturer that made them for the ghurkas themselves for a pretty damn good price, and most tend to agree these are decent kukris.

Thanks, friend. Them being a machete/hatchet hybrid was exactly the reason I wanted one. And yeah this is my first time buying a knife over $40. Not sure of the price range of these things. But why are kukris considered a meme?

Good, heavy knife that is reliable for chopping of all sorts. Can even do the job of a small hatchet that one would use for going on long hikes (i.e. chopping pieces of wood, hanging foliage, and more). Not saying one should replace something like a machete with it if one is going to the amazon, but the kukri is special. I would use it more for just cutting things in the way, and nothing more--but why do that when you can just get a more practical blade like a regular machete?

How sharp should I make it? Is getting it "mora" sharp worth it for a chopping tool like this?

I generally aim for easily shaving sharp on everything. It's good practise both to hone your sharpening skills and for the safety aspect of keeping your knives sharp. I tend to do this with my kukri's to reduce glancing blows and for peace of mind. I find the meme curve a little difficult because I sharpen freehand on benchstones. You'll also find that kukri's generally have poor cutting geometry. That being said, there's a lot of variation in kukri design. The shape has been adapted to a variety of uses, not only innawoods.

Thanks for your insightful reply. That's what I thought. I just read some stuff about people having different levels of sharpness at different points on the blade like keeping the tip dull the curve sharp but a very wide edge and then a fine sharp edge in the crook

I sharpen on diamond stones with a thin non-slip rubber mat underneath. It helps keep the stone in place and helps match the convex edge bevel. Both my kukri's from kukri house have full convex grinds, if you ignore the fullers (chirra's). I'd highly recommend the kukri house mini 3 chirra kukri, is much nicer handle than the full size. The full size handle sucks, as do most traditional kukri handles, with that mid grip ridge. They also don't come with the smaller acompanying knives, which I regard as unecessary bulk on the sheath. I have nicer knives that size. Kukri house seems to have a solid reputation, and I've used the full size 3 chirra a ton. Would recommend.

The problem with the smith & wesson kukri is that the blade profile absolutely sucks. I used and angle grinder to reprofile the blade. After that it works great. I've cleared acres of brush with the thing.

Yes. She was holding the branch she was chopping on far to close to where the blade was landing. I had explicitly warned her barely a minute before it happened. Hard headed and almost lopped her finger off. Tendon was only partially severed. Fortunately I had a complete medical pack and irrigated the wound with benzalkonium wash, dried, and bandaged it. Healed nicely. She learned her lesson I think.
