If you have a business that requires you to be on premises (ie animals) you can often get permission to build a house on.
Also in Scotland building regulations were slackened for huts. The catches are they have to be <30m2 and youre supposed to only spend 28 nights a year there.
Also there is a presumption towards sustainable development. If you have a green field site youll exponentially increase the likelihood of getting permission if you follow sus guidelines.
Crofting is a different situation again, and is only really viable in the north of Scotland.
And it's not 10k per acre. It depends on the quality and type of land and what resources are on it. I have seen 4 acre plots for 15k in the central belt, but 4 acre plots with a burn or adjacent to a river or canal are going to be more.
Personally I am aiming at buying a woodland close to my (conventional) home. That way I can spend my free timr and weekends there. Build a small cabin,maybe a little garden plot and some coppicing. I am already in my thirties and 10-30k for a forest plot (the cost of a car...) seems pretty affordable to me.
