My goal is to build a small main house in the woods, then turn it into a compound with additional smaller buildings over the years (garage/shop, greenhouse, smokehouse, and as kids grow up and want more privacy, maybe I'll even teach them and we can build new 10x10 bedroom cabins together, etc). I understand that there will be redundancy in heating, plumbing, and electrical, but it's worth it.
