Well, my Tarptent Contrail arrived a few hours ago and I set it up in the yard. It will take some practice to get it taut, I noticed.

Or is a tent the only way to do this? Because then I suppose I'll have to look into it.

great tent man, takes like 2 minutes to get set up.
some tips:

Sweet tips, and I hope they'll be put to use next weekend. Lot's of time to hone my pitching technique until then!

I'll admit I'm not particularly talented with aerodynamics, but I think a sloped small sized tarp as a windbreak at the back of the tent might work for really windy days, among other uses. Also nice to have a back-up shelter if something were to rip real bad.
