I need a bit of advice /out/.
I've recently got into winter camping but i have cheaped out on my sleeping mat so my last trip wasn't exactly comfy.
I'm a broke ass student and i would like your advice on the most economical way to stay warm in -15C/5F degree weather.
Suggestions for an affordable (self inflating) sleeping mat would be much appreciated but DIY/jerry rigged solutions are also more than welcome.
Also general sleeping mat thread.

If you want free, either use snow, or take some garbage bags and forage as much bush insulation (moss, cattails, etc.) as you can and sleep on that. If you wanna buy an actual sleeping pad the one you have in your pic is good bang for your buck, you're just gonna hate blowing it up. If you wanna spend the extra $, go for a sea to summit pad. All the people that are gonna recommend thermarest to you will do so because they haven't tried anything better

If you already have one but it's just not warm enough, doubling up is an option. Just buy a foam pad for underneath, the R-values are additive. It's what I do, my inflatable is rated to 20 but I sleep cold so anything under 25 or so I bring a z-lite as well.

If you are really broke just go for a roll up foam pad. The ones with silver reflectix are very warm and you can even stack them for snow camping. And you never have to worry about it popping! fuck I hate when a pad leaks after a long ass hike into the cold woods.

I think i'm going for the cheap pad/foam mat combo untill my wallet allows me to buy something nice.
Since i don't want to make a new thread in the future does anyone have experience with pic related (defcon 5 bivy)?
I'm very much tempted to get one in the future.

I bought one of these meme pads and I have no idea how to pack this gigantic thing. Lash it to the outside I guess? It's like half my body size.

Of you're balling on a budget check military surplus shops. I've gotten brand new $700 sleeping bags for $15 and seen a few outdoor research advance bivys go around $70. So it wouldn't be uncommon to find a good thermarest there.

Biggest problem is going to be covering yourself because you're going to need at least 2 standard (40F) sleeping bags (opened up not hot pocket), plus another blanket of some kind on top of them. And thats for 15F sorta weather without wind.

Homeless Solution for a mat from scrounged materials:
* Lay 2" partially decayed sticks out in the leaves.
* Lay a ruined inflatable mattress on top of it (found due to it having a hole in it probably).
* Lay a Comforter over it.

As a homeless person dont bother carrying these things with you during the day, just leave them out in the woods near where you camp. To prevent them being stolen roll your comforter up in a couple trash bags and find a place to stash it. If you have collected any spare backpacks from donations or such put it in there to keep the animals from playing with the plastic (its okay if the backpack gets wet as long as the bags dont have holes in them).

Basically roll up the (un)inflatable mattress and take it and the comforter over to some fallen tree or bushes and hide them somewhere under or around it.

If you havent GetGud at camouflage yet go to Walmart and look for their fleece throws, they've usually got a good deal on them for $2.50 but ive seen them go up to $6 before.

Best fucking camouflage ive seen for multi-environment and multi-seasonal. And it will stand up to several years of all weather exposure too. Pic related. Its not a Tarp so its not going to stop water... its the kinda thing you put over your flaming orange shit so that nobody can see it. And if it rains it might well mat this thing down and help to make sure your tarps dont blow all over the damn place.
