Asked this on /k/ and it got very little traction, figured I'd ask here as well.
I'm looking to get a bolt action (or semi-auto) hunting rifle for whitetail and hogs, and I came across a few options I want your opinion on.
>Mauser M96 American in .30-06 w/Zeiss Conquest 3-9x40 scope
>Sako A7 Roughtech Pro in .308
>Sako 85 Synthetic Stainless in .308
>Merkel MHR16 in .308
>Sauer 101 in .308
>Benelli R1 in .30-06
The Mauser of all of the guns interested me the most, I've never heard of this gun until I handled it today. It's a very smooth straight pull bolt action but the price is both intriguing and concerning. $599 for the gun + scope + ammo. This seems too cheap for the condition it was in. Is there something bad about these rifles that they're going for absolutely nothing? The Sakos are tried and true and a safe bet, but cost double the price of the Mauser and I'd have to spend another $400+ on an optic. The Merkel was nice and also strangely cheap at $600, and all I know Merkel for is their RX Helix straight pulls at $3000. The Sauer was also nice but I've never experienced one outside of shooting my dad's 404, which is also a $4000 rifle. The gun will mainly be used for hog hunting and whitetail hunting since I already have a dedicated precision rifle.
