Personally I like batonning with a hatchet or froe type tool. The thing that ruined batonning and turned it into a meme are all the fags on youtube that baton with with pocket knives and small fixed blades. Personally, I would never baton with my knife, regardless of it's size.

What do they call that tool in the original language show? It looks like a Japanese woodworking tool, similar to a froe, called a "Takewari". In which case, that is the acceptable tool for batoning.

I am sure you could do it, I don't think the blade geometry lends itself very well to the task though, same thing goes for any knife really. I only baton with the hatchet or the buck froe. The buck has a very wedge like design so it pops the wood apart just like the hatchet.

that looks like an actual froe of some sort, rather than an overpriced bushcraft knife, although they usually have perpendicular handles because most people won't split tiny logs like that and you need the reach.

It's a traditional Japanese hatchet, though it's basically just a non-stabby knife to get around laws.

The problem is that they have almost no tang, so the handle seperating from the blade is a real possibility.

You definitely don't want to baton with one.

It is a bamboo froe, meant for bamboo only (Takewari). You do baton with it, but never with normal wood, only with bamboo. Bamboo is super easy to split.

The one used in the Yuru Camp anime is being used incorrectly regardless of what it is intended to be used with. The method shown to split the wood is very dangerous.

Somewhat, yes. All my camp buddies come from the local camp grounds I'm saying at. The general rule is that if you stay in your tent overnight, you're sleeping with someone from another tent or vice versa. After a week or two, the campground neighborhood is much like a family. Everyone knows everyone else fairly well. It is quite refreshing.

1) Why the fuck do you care if you have mold on the inside of your sleeping pad? You never come into contact with it unless you're sucking on the valve to deflate it or something.
2) My air mattress with an R-value of 9 is more insulating than any foam pad I've found yet. Air mattresses have come a long ways.

I used pool floats as air mattresses before. They work really well even in winter. Convection inside them isn't much of a concern it turns out.

How to batonny without breaking your knife

1. Use a heavy knife that's like 1/5 inch thick and has a decent tang that isn't two inches long and fastened in a plastic handle. The beefy girth is mandatory because you are splitting and if you use your cold steel wakazashi it will not split the wood and will become stuck
2. Use a heavy stick and don't hit it with a steel hammer like a fucking moron
3. Line up with the knots in the wood so you aren't hitting the worst ones at an intersecting angle
4. If the wood is too knotty or otherwise difficult to cleave don't wail on it like some kind of pissed off gorilla
5. An axe is better

Tool steel is just a semi-stainless steel that's stronger than stainless (generally speaking), and harder than most carbon steel.

Kinda an in-between steel.

I wouldn't recommend hitting it with a hammer, though, as everything breaks and it's misusing the tool.

D2 (an old steel, really), is what's commonly used nowadays in knives.

I mean, I've been on 4chan since 2006...a whole 12 years this year and that's not bad, I guess it's how you spent your time here that matters, some of the boards can give you an amazing set of knowledge. I learnt a language because of /int/, i learnt more about weapons than your average hobbyist because of /k/, i got /fit/ and hell, i could have a lot more money if i listened to /biz/ and their ponzi schemes which have been pretty effective so far.

I'm just glad i didn't get trapped in /b/, /v/ or any of the other useless boards. Imagine having spent all that time browsing 4chan and not learning anything productive despite the opportunities.

But yeah I agree. There's actually things to learn. I'm not /fit/ as hell but I've lost weight because of that board. I've gained insight I didn't previously have into /out/ and learned more about /k/ than I would have on my own.
