Whether they be trails, tails, and tall tales, let's share them

Here's what scares me most: El Camino Del Rey (pic related). It's a little trail that winds up to a Hydroelectric plant on top of a mountain in Spain. I've been nowhere near it, but just watching videos of it makes me want to puke.

Most things I am fine with, spiders, snakes, heights - all fine. But flying insects of any kind make me lose my shit.

The other day I was hiking a coastal trail and for god knows why it was covered in wasps. I was wearing sandals and literally every 5 metres I'd have to side step one.

At one point I came upon a whole fucking swarm that was just arsing around in the middle of the trail. I had to rummage through my backpack for my rain gear all while these wasps are crawling over my legs and shit.

It's weird though, I've never been stung while tramping, yet the other day I was walking up my driveway and one fucker flew out and stung me on the head.

Fuck wasps.

I don't think anything scares me more than the woods at night. I'm fine during the day, and I have no problem sleeping in a tent, but just being out in the darkness scares the shit out of me. It gets so god damn dark, and the thought of what is out there that can see me just sends me into a panic. Reading stories about samsquamch and skinwalkers definitely hasn't helped.

When I was about 12 years old, me and my family were hiking a trail that was largely overgrown. We eventually got lost because. We were walking down a mountain, when my younger brother stepped into a wasp's nest. I remember looking behind me and see my brother storming down with a whole lot of wasps surrounding him. He practically ran over me and somehow only got about 5 stings (of which one in his ear, which then grew to an incredible size)

Also, that's only a tiny section of walkway; there are places where it's gone completely, and you have to cling to the cliff's side to progress

I literally flew home from el caminito del ray last night. Spent 3 days up there camping and did a little climbing. Bolted anchors into either side of the gorge and made a little ropeswing.

Swing gear:
>100m static
>60m static
>40m dynamic
>50m dynamic

The walkway is not that dangerous, it's easily doable without safety gear, though if you have it you might as well use it. We saw people coming up and down with nothing but a cellphone camera.

75% of the walkway is bolted and cabled for via-ferrata, the rest doesn't need it. My gf was shitting herself the first time we crossed, by the 4th she was running up and down without any issues, even while hauling all the camping gear and stuff for the ropeswing.

I think that being afraid of the wilderness at night is part of human instinct. Thinking back to our ancestors huddling in caves and, knowing that darkness brought predators and that light was their only real weapon. When I'm with people, I'm totally fine, but by myself, and I get startled by noises coming from the woods around me. I get real twitchy and jumpy

Deep water at night freaks me out pretty good. Deep water in general, the kind on crystal clear lakes where you look down and just see black because the lake is too deep for light to really penetrate it is fucking freaky, especially while looking at it in a canoe or kayak. At night though, it just reminds me of every story about people being dragged to the depths by some monstrous fish or squid. When I was a kid, my friends would go tubing or jump off boats in the middle of the water. I would just nope my way out of that. I love swimming, but I'm always still super uncomfortable when I can't see the bottom of the section of the lake I'm in.

What scares me is dark woods at night. But 95% of the time I have two guns with me and it is truly an exciting feeling. Last week I walked for about 20 minutes with my light off stopping every 30 feet or so to listen for noises. It was terrifying but the rush was insane

I've been on some pretty sketchy routes hiking in the Lake District (Striding Edge on Helvellyn, Jack's Rake on Pavey Ark), but none of them ever really scared me. Then I came across Great Slab on Bowfell (pic related). It's a massive slab of granite at an angle upwards of 45 degrees, and whilst you can't see it on this pic, there's a sheer cliff at the bottom with a good couple of hundred feet drop. I crawled up the thing, clinging onto it for dear life.

I've done this before, just to help myself get over my fear of the woods at night (I do a lot of solo backpacking). I live near some woods, and every now and then I'll go out into them at night as far as I dare, turn off my light and just stand there and work on keeping myself calm. It's actually quite liberating to get over the fear of the woods at night, you get to experience the forest in a whole new and beautiful way.
