Does anyone else go /out/ for spiritual reasons?

I only feel truly close to God in the backcountry.

yeah but not to get close to god per se. I go out into the backcountry for different reasons, but sometimes it's just to maintain a balance. you never realize how much of your life is rooted in civilization until you're disconnected.

never specifically for those reasons, but whenever i do go out, like really really out, i always feel incredibly fulfilled. moreso than i usually do in the city life.

there are some real beautiful places in the world, and it feels good to be part of a community that appreciates those things, feels bad knowing that there are some in this world who will never take in a 360 vista from the top of a mountain.

makes me feel small, desu. in a good way

Yep. Just went on a hike with a group of friends that I haven’t seen in a while and never felt more disconnected from nature.

I go /out/ in the forrest for rituals and to practice spell casting.
I'd really like to get into sacrifices, but I can go to jail for that in my country.
I also really want to travel to Scandinavia, Romania, and a lot of 10th century Europe in general to go /out/

I am Christian but I do not go to church often. I go to a bible study every Saturday morning, but Jesus promotes a personal relationship with god heavily for a reason. I hated religion because of church, but once I actually personally connected to god I could see.

Sometimes you don’t need to see to believe, but to believe before you can see.

I don’t believe in God or other gods but I do know there are measurably positive psychological effects on humans from being outdoors and close to nature. Going /out/ is how I deal with depression and anxiety. That and drugs. Sometimes both.

When out in nature , nearly all humans feel a wonderful sense of awe and euphoria.
Especially at places near mountaintops.
Why people think this has to do with god I will never understand.
My guess is that this feeling was hijacked by religion generations ago and now parents infect their children with this false connection when they first experience it .

In the 19th century this was often used to distinguish between the ideas of "the beautiful" and "the sublime"-- the sublime being dangerous and terrifying in addition to being beautiful.

I think you can have epiphanies and realizations in the outdoors, especially under duress. You can feel your mortality much more significantly. You are less insulated from reality by gadgetry, language and societal forms.

But there's something deeply human about language and society, and I don't think we ever reach Nirvana in the forest.

We have to bring discourse/society into the woods with us to make the best of it. We have to bring thoughts with us that we can mull over, edit, adjust and come to believe. We have to take books or poems.
