Is it ever really sensible to carry a gun /out/doors in order to protect yourself from animals (apart from human animals)?

I don't actually recommend a gun for anybody despite my choice to carry one. It's nonessential gear that's heavy and for the untrained, dangerous. For me, I like guns and carry a baby .40 most always but I also have a 4" 44mag (629) that is the option I choose in bear country. I would be just as comfortable with spray.

If I knew there were wild animals (mountain lions, bears, etc) I'd pack a large caliber handgun and a couple extra rounds.

IMO bear spray will work 99% of the time, but there is a chance it won't work and my life isn't worth worrying about a few extra pounds or the life of some animal.

I usually bring one or toss one in the truck. In Canada handguns are limited to the range, so usually the 12 gauge or a larger rifle. It adds that extra security (the area I live has a lot of 13" grizzly foot prints) when I go fishing

If one lives in Africa or in an area with polar bears, then yes.

If it's just bears and cougars, then deal with it. If you get attacked then maybe you oughta get some more outdoor practise.

I mostly carry it camping for the reason that the state park I frequent is a big meth manufacturing area. I have had to draw it on to one meth head in particular who had stumbled into my campsite and attempted to steal my backpack. Luckily I only had to drawn it on him, once he was staring at my G37 he dropped the pack and moved on. I relocated my campsite shortly after for safety reason.

Ghetto urban areas != being out in nature. I avoid rough neighbourhoods knowing the human trash that populate them would have no problem jumping me, and I stay generally cautious in any urban area. These people don't venture outside their turf though and in my country they simply do not exist in the wild.

If you fear animals enough to need a gun to get the upper hand you really have no business in a forest. I've had bears make bluff charges right past me. Would be on my way without even a scratch. But by all means, bring a gun or a dog and see how well you fare.

A firearm is a tool. It might not be the right one, but it's a tool. Carry it or not, your choice.

I carry a sidearm and bear spray. Been close enough to bears I could have kicked them. See them about once a month through the summer. I've seen evidence of mountain lions, but never actually seen one. Buddy that lives in the mountains had one around his house that was stalking his wife last summer.

Then there's the people. I've ridden by very fresh meth labs. Pot growing operations are busted every now and then in national forests where I ride.

A gun is a powerful tool that works well in certain situations. It's your responsibility to understand its power and use it appropriately. If you're unwilling to take that responsibility, don't carry a firearm.

I'd wager even if one were going deep into the everglades (or wherever) and there's a risk of encountering gators, but I feel like they moreso rely on sneak-attacks to get their prey and you'd likely not have time to draw and fire.

I think the thing people should realize is that there are some places in the world where humans are not the top of the food chain unless they come in with a group of well-armed special forces or something.

I see it a lot like a first aid kit or PLB. Something you train with and carry along anytime you're /out/, but hope you never need to use it.

And ... ignorance is bliss. There's a lot of things I wish I didn't know and would like to un-learn. Life would be a lot easier that way.

I'd love to get a bigger adventure-capable bike with some luggage options for cameras/overnight/multi-day rides. Seen a few KTM 990 Adventure's up for sale for reasonable prices.
