Are these satisfying methods of fishing, or just giant memes? I'd love to try saltwater fly, for instance, but not enough to bother getting a proper fly outfit or to justify the cost.

tenkara is a meme, just go to walmart and buy one of those telescopic "shakespeare wonderpole"s
micro fishing can be fun but is also a meme. if you want to try it get some ice fishing bobbers, some micro splitshot, a spool of 6x or 7x tippet, and a #20 hook (or smller, easy to find if you search for midge hooks) then either hook a single maggot on to them like in pic related (sorry for ant pic, also hooked like this fish have a hard time taking it and also it stays on really well and moves a lot) or you can just cut regular worms in to tiny pieces and fish that (i mean painfully small, a square that's only like 3x3mm at most)
llive minnows as bait are not so much satisfying as effective

Live bait fishing with minnows is straight in some conditions. We used to land tons of walleye back in the day doing that, plus you would hit the random catfish or big bass on there too. And it's a good way to get stuff in pressured water. I grabbed some shiners when I brought Miami anon out because I wanted her to catch something. Live bait fishing with baitfish just straight up catch anything in saltwater. It's the best method 80%-90% of the time if you simply want to the best chance to catch fishes of any game fish species. However, you do have to deal with obtaining the bait as well as managing your live bait tank so the fishes stay alive.

Going to continue on why I love microfishing.

Quantity over quality. Also I got a thing for tiny beautiful creeks that run through the wilderness.

You will be surprised how populated lil creeks can be. And the size of some fish can be surprising.

Wouldn't do it all the time ofc. But sometimes it's nice to change it up and go after small lil guys

Live bait fishing is my preferred way to spend a day on the water. A whole day spent observing conditions, observing fish feeding patterns, catching what they're eating (sometimes by microfishing) then using that to catch my target species. And all the while you're taking in nature skygazing and observing other animals out on the water. And if I'm out long enough, I clean and cook a little of my catch.

Really makes me feel closer to the whole web of life and makes me consider how amazing it all is and how small I am.

Artificial for me is only for when I want to spend 30 min to 2 hours on a body of water just to catch a couple fish for fun, scout an area, or take the wife out.

These don't actually work, do they? I occasionally put a couple bright lanterns right above the water and have had noticeable improvement over fishing in the dark, but that has to be because it draws in little fish which draws in the bigger fish, right? No way in hell I would get the same results with a slightly glowing 2 inch plastic moving through the water?

This is the only way I have ever had reliable luck on crappies. With any other baits it is hit or miss. That said I almost never use minnows, I don't use enough in a day and I end up dumping most of them in my duck pond for the birds to eat. (It is a 3 foot deep 6x20 trench inside a pen, I don't dump minnows into actual waters)

No they wont surpass the obvious standards
(clousers & deceivers) but I would tie a couple up to have in the box.
I've only caught mackerel, blues & bonito on them when the fish were keying on small baits. have never tried them for freshwater fish though.

I have a glo in the dark jig I use ice fishing. Would recommend honestly. I only could catch fish in ~ 20 feet of water so they needed to see it pretty good.

the most notable is my buddy's favorite way for early season crappie is to use one with something like 8 or 10 pound mono to wade right up to brush piles and pry them out. he also likes it for vertical jigging stumps because he can drop it right next to the stump and keep it there

Because squarebills only dive to 4ft and are ideal for shallow flats and the backs of coves. Wigglewarts dive over twice as deep and excel at being bounced off rocky bottoms. Different lures for different conditions. Both are great but not interchangeable.

That's an old Shimano Calcutta (they used to be silver). Like a good gun they'll run forever if you clean and lube them. It's on a 7'2" Falcon Bucoo MH Fast with 30lb braid. I only use it for frogging/topwaters and big swimbaits. Usually have a flouro leader on it but that Whopper Plopper doesn't require one.

They didn’t have any brown. I trimmed from the middle of one of the tails and used that for the bottom. They also didnt have medium size rubber legs in brown. They did have black in medium so I got both those and the “fine” brown legs as seen used in that pic

The one in that picture was the only clouser I tied. I’ll try again tomorrow or maybe later

oh mine are tied with a white bucktail, but with the denser brown fibers off the back with none of the shorts stripped out. and honestly the fine rubberlegs look fine. over all it's actually a pretty good clouser, just not the "backwards bug" variant. the backwards bug is really dense and uses all fur from the brown back of the bucktail

I bought a tenkara rod specifically so I'd have an easy to pack rod for flying. It's still a huge fucking meme but the ones actually made in Japan kick the shit out of the "memekara usa" rods and they cost less.

I don’t get the point in squarebills.

If fish are actively feed up in the water column or in the shallows I don’t see why you wouldn’t just burn a lipless or use some sort of jerkbait.

i'll admit it has its applications but they're so specific that if your scenario demands one, the second you discover tenkara there will be no question that it's the answer. basically, if you have to ask if tenkara is a good option, it probably isn't.

What happen if you want to fish shallow or near the surface and wish to go for a slow/medium retrieve. It’s like saying deep diving is also useless because you can just have a lipless crank sink then start the retrieve. Sure you can fish a weightless paddletail for near surface/ shallow water slow/medium retrieve but you wouldn’t be making the same action/noise/profile. I would argue that squarebill covers a more unique niche than deepdiving bill as it’s easier to have stuffs sink and retrieve rather than keeping a lure near the surface consistently at any speed.

Squarebills are intended to bounce off of cover, no? Wiggle Warts do just that- while maintaining contact with the bottom from a few inches to ~8 feet. The only time I see a squarebill being better is if you have one of those with the circuit board bills or if you’re faced with spooky fish that don’t like the rattles.

Also, I like your taste in rods. Falcons are sweet, but I’m too cheap to buy more

No, the bills are diving mechanism first, “deflection” second. It will deflect okay if you hit some stuff like an occasional big branch but your hooks will still catch shit if there’s anything in the water to catch. The specifix depth wigglewart is 7+ ft. What happen if you are fishing in 6ft or less water? Your wigglewart will constantly drag on the bottom, killing the action while ruining your hooks. What happen if there’s heavy vegetation that grow up to 6ft from the surface? Your wigglewart will dive straight into the veggie bed and get stuck. Predators don’t chase bait fish swimming inside the grass in the first place. They wait inside of the grass attack bait fish wandering just outside of the grass in the open. Predator fishes only eat slower stuffs in vegetation like crab, crawfish, and worm. A squarebill in that situation can move just above the grass or the ground and be perfect prey for predators.

Weight transfer is done for the more consistent straight flying cast of a minnow shape lure. Without a good weight transfer and a bit of wind, non-weight transfer lures are more likely tumble wildly in a cast. You get like a 50/50 good cast/ bad cast with a non-weight transfer and you also have to swing more smoothly instead of full power for your lures to fly straight. If a rapala flies straight, it would almost match the distance of a weight-transfer lure. If it tumble then the distance can be reduced to even half in the worst case of tumbling.

I want to also add that a straight flying lure would land with a smaller splash compared to a tumbling/wobbling one. Also, a good weight transfer system not only allow the weight to be at the tail during the cast but also go back to the center/front quickly after the cast is finished. Mounting the Transducer to the topside of the hull generally makes it so you get shit resolution, it works fine for larger boats that are in deeper water but for something like a kayak you really want the transducer directly in the water itself, plus getting the epoxy bedding to adhere to plastic is likely a real pain in the ass.

I have a bait bucket that does both. It has tiny holes in the lid so I can drop it in the water and give them fresh water. It also has a hole that I can stick an aerator in. The biggest killer of minnows is heat. A bucket in the sun will heat up 10 degrees and that's when they will die. The temperature change is stressful and warm water holds less oxygen, add a couple dozen fish to a tiny environment and they run out of oxygen and overheat like it's season 2 of the wire.

Other option is a livebait pen. Buying one is expensive. It’s not too complicate to make one yourself. Any closed container with holes would work. You can punch hole into a bucket with lid. Add some weight and attach a rope and you should be set. Just make sure the container is decent enough that birds or seals can’t destroy it easily. Live bait will survive very well without you having to change water. An aerator might help if the the pen is in a spot where water is too calm for oxygen to mix

I think I have some of those. Haven’t used them a ton, but when I finally gave in and tried the Wacky Rigs one day, I had some Yamamotos, Yums, and the Z Mans. The Z Mans definitely caught the most. Went to Bass Pro and bc she has this temporary FL DL, freshwater went from $17.50 to $47.50 and saltwater from shoreline went from free to $47.50. It was dark already and she will have her regular DL soon, plus I didn’t even know if we were gonna do fresh or salt.

I told her we’ll get the non resident 3-day for $17.50 when we get out early enough for a full day or wait a month or two and get the yearly one for <$20 instead of nearly $100.

Brought her to my house and cooked her dinner instead.

lake up at cottage where I do 90% of my fishing.
deepest spot is about 35-40ft. only 2 things worth catching there is pike and large/smallmouth bass.
in the spring and summer, the fish are going all out on the lures (use baits: jigs, spinners, spoons, weedless frogs, and regular shallow lures). but at begining of october, the fish action just drops to close to zero. the only fish that i seem to be able to catch are crappies and the rare chance of a juvenile smallmouth.
wtf is going on? is it the lures im using? have the fish become lazy shits? what can i do to make sure i get a good catch?

(lake is up in Ontario near great lakes)

Like 2 years ago I saw that Booyah spinner with chartruese blades at the Miami Bass Pro and wanted to grab it but passed, and then went back 2 or 3 times looking for it again but could never find the same one with the painted blades. Finally found it online and the white one looks like it could do work in the spring too.

I may already own that exact X Rap too. We’ll see when it shows up. Still want to get more Sebile Flatt Shads but Bass Pro doesn’t have them online and I don’t feel like placing a TW order for 3 Sebiles.

Maybe it will convince me to actually get out fishin. I finally renewed my license yesterday since it expired after Thanksgiving.

trout season coming up soon and i have a question for someone more expierenced.
how line shy are freshly stocked trout? theres a pond near me thats stocked with rainbows, mostly small, but theres a few 4lbers in there. i usually fish with 6 lb mono and just have the drag fairly light. problem is it gets so damn crouded opening day that i dont think i can land a big one with my drag loose. the place is almost shoulder to shoulder casting, i am not exagerating. i'm afraid that if i hook a big one with 6 lb he will either take a bunch of line, tangle in about 4 other people and get off, or i'll just snap him off while trying to horse him in to prevent him getting tangled.
TLDR will stocked trout hit 10lb+ braid or mono because i need to be able to land them ASAP

That means they don't know how to tie a knot or set a drag. I once saw a guy land a 20 lb carp in on 2 lb test. It helped that it was at a reservoir with a mud bottom and no snags, but still, knot+drag=landing a fish bigger than your #test.

Yeah the one here is not accessible by boat or foot, blocked by barbed wire fence. But it makes a few hundred feet of open water outside the fence even and there's still fish even though most of them are inside the fence.

Looks like the one you bought is already spooled with 6lb line. Which is perfect for what you plan on fishing.

For bluegill use a split shot rig on a small hook with like 1/3 of a night crawler.

For catfish use a carolina rig with a hotdog or some type of dough bait.

That should get you started.

I’m sure they’re nice. Lots of people like Z-Mans because they use that soft plastic that lasts forever and has a nice wiggle. Not sure how the hook sits in them tho. That’s one of the big reasons I don’t love Zoom Flukes. Some other brands like Gambler and Strike King have slots cut into the top and bottom of the bait and it seems like it’s easier to set the hook and they remain snagless longrr while Zoom only has the slot in the bottom of the bait so once the hook breaks through the top, it’s hard to keep using the same bait or it will get caught up on weeds n stuff.

Help, my line keeps cutting itself with any knot I try! This happened on both my spinning and fly rig, which have a 6 lb mono and 4x tippet respectively. I lost 3 flies to baby-tier trout and a spinner to floating weeds! I even changed my leader and cut some line off my spinning reel, yet it kept happening!
I tried using clinch, palomar, orvis, uni, but none worked and I lost it when the line broke with a light tug just to sanity check...

Been using nothing but double surgeon knot on all of my fly rigs. Never had an issue with it breaking. I like to pull it snug then push the knot towards itself on both sides to push the line as tight as I can and prevents any possibility of it wiggling free after I clip the two tag ends

The biggest problem with pike is tooth city breaking the line a few inches up from the knot. So use a wire leader and some 17 lb test and you should be alright with properly set drag and good knots. You could get away with 12 or 14 lb test if the one in the pic is about the size you might catch.

For whatever reason your line is degraded. Time is important but most important is UV/heat exposure which degrades it fast so if your garage gets 110 degrees in the summer that killed it. I usually just take my spool up to the bait shop and they use the whizzinator to spool it perfectly in about 30 seconds. That way I don't have to pay for extra yards of line and don't have problems with line twist or anything that may occur when self-spooling.

Ugly Stiks will bend and bend anyway. You won’t snap that fiberglass rod. The reel and line will make a bigger difference because you want a little drag to keep working them.

Like somebody else said, the lure weight will be the issue because it’s going to be a bitch to toss 2oz lures on that flimsy rod rated for 1/2oz.

I haven’t had any issue with any of the rio brand tippet spools in almost all the diameters they sell it in. They are labeled as “powerflex” and “poweflex plus”. Alternatively when I’m salmon fishing I use Seaguar “Grand Max” which I again haven’t ever had an issue with.

yeah they do like to pick things up if you're not careful. i always use a blood knot, cut the tags long (if normally i'd cut a tag to 1-2mm i leave these tags 3-4 mm) and melt them down with a lighter, it really smooths up the knot and makes them slip through the bullshit better.

it's not awful, it will absolutely fish, but i can offer some tips.
1: tie like the hook is a hook eye's length shorter than it actually is so that you have a space almost an eye length long to build a neat little head, here's a video for that

In March I’m planning a trip to the Port St. Joe area of FL (Cape San Blas/Indian Pass). I’ll bring my 8 wt but I want to pick up a spin rod to throw out some shrimp one pompano rig while I drink beer and hang out on the beach (it’ll be spring break). Can I pick up a decent rod and reel for around $50? I don’t know anything about conventional tackle. Is a pompano rig the way to go or would something else work better?

If anyone is familiar with the area and can offer advice I’d appreciate it.

Well it depends on what spinner you already own and want to keep as well. Either the M or MH 7ft might be good but you might have something with slightly different specs from your spinner. 10-30 gr is definitely not heavy. People’s first baitcaster is usually more on the heavy side since it’s easier to learn casting with heavier lures

Well seeing as you want to fish both pike and perch I don’t see any reason why you shouldn’t go with a longer rod. As far as the weight it’s capable it’s throwing comes down to what you primarily are using when targeting pike. From the choices you posted I’d agree the 2.44m rod would probably suit what you want to do the best.

Yea. Irvine lake is dead from lawsuit. Corona lake is also ded from drought. SARL is the only decent lake left back in OC but that lake is fugly. Small citypark lake are overfished as fuck and mostly only have carps. Saltwater bass is definitely interesting but I haven’t dialed in how to catch them on lures yet. I’m much more successful with surf fishing for halibut, croakers, and corbina but I’m struggling with finding bass in the inlet on lures. Got only one small calico yesterday from 3 hrs of fishing. It was interesting too. I was getting nothing. Then, suddenly, a single sea bird suddenly blitz a school of baitfish right next to my feet. Suddenly, baitfish went into panic mode and then bunch of predator get worked up as well. First cast into it and the small calico instantly get hooked up. After 10 min, it was all quiet again. No activity even though the school of baitfish is just chilling right there. I’m thinking of doing something to work up the baitfish to get the predators into feeding mood like running a lure right past it or throw some crackers/bread at them
It is a lot different from the surf where I can identify a structure according to the wavebreak and almost always get something out of it everytime. Maybe I need a boat. I’m thinking about buying a kayak but I’m still researching about it. I’m not sure about storage and transport logistic of it yet.

Fellow subject! Damn shame about corona lake. I had no idea that it closed...motherfuckers. Whittier narrows is COMPLETE ass. I hit SARL a couple of weeks back and only managed 2 fish. It is indeed a fugly "lake".
Inshore bass is a lot like lmb fishing. Spotted bass=Smallmouth bass. All 3 species will eat paddletails and spinnerbaits with gusto. If you want to inshore bass fish you need to specifically target those fuckers. Bays and docks are good. Some surf areas can be productive, but most people discreetly go onto private docks and throw big hammer's around pillars. All you need is a good plastics rod, a spinnerbait rod, and maybe a flipping stick. A float tube would also be a good idea, I've seen some crusty old men slay halibut and bass in them.

I’m not brave enough to trepassing into private docks yet so I’m just fishing on public access spot. No luck on the jetties so far but I’m getting some stuff from the Dana Point island. It is a bit of a drive but the island spot is max comfy because I can park right infront of my fishing spot. It is also clean, has restroom nearby, next to a police station so no homeless and illegal fisherman, and not that many people fish by there despite being a really good spot. I also can fish there comfortably at night and not be worried about getting assaulted or fall and die in middle of a jetty without anyone knowing. I’m getting fishes but it just feel a bit more “random” for now compared to surf fishing where I can look at a spot, have a good “feeling”, and land fishes as I expected. I throw basically throw anything under 5/8 with a 6’8 M bass spinning rod. Anything 1/2-1 ish oz with a 8ft inshore spinning rod. Anything over than I like to use my baitcaster set up. Baitcaster would work for like big 5inches + mc or bbh swimbait on 1 oz or more head or flipping but I haven’t tried flipping much yet. I’m not sure if there are bass big enough from shore to take a swimbait that big but a big halibut definitely would go for it.

The thing that I don’t like about those specific batch of marabou is the feathers are pretty spuradic in that some are a lot more stringy at the end and some not at all. The few times I did trim those tips I felt like it was too bushy and looked awkward.

nice numbers! and i get what you're saying. not a bad bug there either. maybe a little long on the wing, i like to measure the hair to two whole look lengths (both on backwards bugs and on clousers) so on my computer screen the hook measures out 4 inches so the hair should measure to 8 but it measures to more like 12, but oher than that it looks right and i would fish. also i forget if i said it or not, but the general consensus is that a wooly bugger tail should be as long as the body. your long ones don't look bad but proportions are important.

I’ve been fishing since I was a kid but never gave any thought other than “do what my dad tells me to” and “use what ever poles he lets me use”
I’m looking to pick up my own now but don’t know what a good price point is

Take in mind I’m use to spending 200$ on hiking backpacks, and that’s just a sack to hold stuff.

fair enough. usually for a beginner 60-100 dollars for a combo is normal. i'm guessing you're after a spinning rod? or maybe a fly rod? (always gotta shill the fly gear) or maybe you want one of each?
if you're after a spinning rod probably the most universal is going to be a fast action medium power. fenwick eagle rods are pretty nice for the price, bepis likes his berkley lightning rods that are really budget friendly. really by going up in price, you're not getting durability, any rod will break if you trip and fall on it, close it in a car door or window, bend it too far, or step on it (or any similar trouble) you're paying for a lighter rod, with better sensitivity and action
reels are usually going to cast better and have better drags at a higher price point, a shimano sedona in the appropriate size should serve you well. probably a 6'6'' medium power fenwick eagle will serve you well in most scenarios, then pair it with a 2500 sedona and you should be pretty satisfied for $120-ish

That's all good and fun in some cases but where I go I have to take a motor back and forth down at trails and stuff.(pic related) Plus putting a 2stroke 25 hp on a boat by myself is difficult but doable. I couldn't possibly do that with a 4 stroke. Gas isn't a problem. For driving around at the McLake™ where you just launch your boat from the road and you can put your boat on a lift I can see why 4strokes are good, but I don't really care too much about hours per gallon if I can't use it. To me they're just heavy and impractical.

Yep you are gonna have a bad time trying to use a mayfly or smaller insect as live bait but a tied fly is good.

With a fly rod you have a heavy line and cast the line - not the lure. Between the heavy casting line and the lure is a normal line so it doesn't spook the fish. This lets you use minuscule lures.

Never focused on the fishing itself but the time with my father.

Skid is right, except I will shill for a 7’ Med/Fast Fenwick Eagle with a Pflueger President. Will run you about $130. Pair that with Sufix Pro Mix 8lb which is another 5 or 6 bucks and you got yourself a solid rod that can do anything. I will always shill for a 7’ over a 6’6” as a general purpose rod because there are no benefits of a rod that is 6” shorter except. Instead you will find increased sensitivity and casting distance

for fish like that where you wont be using anything smaller than a size 8 they will be fine for the most part. but if you really want good hooks, gamakatsu and mustad usually make decent hooks.

mixing gas and oil takes me less than a minute. I fill the container to the 5 gallon mark. Then I have the fancy squeeze top bottle of oil that holds 2.6 ounces in the top so I dump 2.6 ounces in 5 times, this method uses almost no brain cells.
