Should I choose a tarp and bivy setup or a tarptent for 3 season use in southern/central California?

Tarptent would be pic related. Weighs 27 oz without stakes.

Benefits would be full 360 degree protection from rain/wind. Allowing me to camp in more exposed areas for better aesthetics. Also more room in the net tent than a bivy.

Tarp would be a 7/5 x 9 cat cut paired with a water resistant bivy. Would weigh 18 oz without stakes.

Benefits would be cowboy camping without the tarp most of the time because California is pretty dry.

I just don't know how well it would hold up to wind of I want to camp somewhere above treeline with a nice (exposed) view

I'd go with the tarptent. Summer showers aren't unheard of, and you can set them up for some shade if you're in the desert or chaparral. As far as wind, the Peninsular Ranges get some crazy wind at higher elevations, making the tarp tent the winner again.

Definitely tarpent. Best of both worlds, 100% bug and rain protection. Huddling under your tarp fighting bugs as water leaks into your bivy, but you don't notice because of all the condensation that's already inside of it is a bad time.
