Alcohol or a multi-fuel.
Tab stoves are meh. The heat output is unimpressive and tablets stink and leave a nasty residue all over. Really only good as an emergency back-up.

I have both and I recommend the alcohol
the tabs get soot all over the pot and I like being able to adjust my fill for how much cook time I think I need

soot means tiny bits of un-burned fuel are being emitted and sticking to stuff
including whatever is in the pot even though you may not see it
it's OK over a wood fire but if your fuel is a synthetic hydrocarbon wax you want to avoid it

Oh that makes sense, I didn't really think of that. What about alcohol gel? I've seen it before but looking it up I'm not finding much of anything except packs of jars rather than a squeeze tube.

esbit residue is sticky and smelly, not like wood fire residue. so even if confined to storage bag, it gets nasty and spread all over your food prep equipment over time.

if it's a small cup or tiny pot, I'll rub it on sand or dry grass right after taking it off the esbit, and that will help take most of the goop off.

Not him, but it's not the same kind of soot a stick stove or fuel stove leaves. It's more like a sticky, noxious tar.
Hexamine tablets are just chemically nasty little fuckers, formaldehyde, ammonia, hydrogen cyanide, among other things.

I havn't had much experience with it except for lighting a pellet stove
I feel like it would be cleaner than the wax tabs but it burns fast so you would probably need roughly the same amount of gel as you would regular alcohol
you can get it at places that sell fireplaces in large bottles and put it in something smaller

Alcohol stove for shorter trips, I use a Trangia burner with an Esbit windshield and mostly just boil water with it for tea and instant meals.
Kovea spider for longer trips.

More for hiking/backpacking/bike packing, I have one of these. Fuel is very cheap and available. I never encounter cold temperatures though.

Yep, ethanol to be precise commonly sold as denatured alcohol here, standard fuel for a Trangia burner. I pay something like 2 swissbucks per litre, so its fairly cheap.

Always read the label when buying denatured alcohol, you want as much ethanol as possible.
Most brands that are sold as camp or marine stove fuel are pretty clean, but cheap hardware store mix often has more methanol and other additives.

Whitebox stove, ti pot, and foil wind shield. Burn whatever alcohol I can buy in the country I am hiking. These days I tend to leave the stove at home though. Laziness has taken over and it's just much easier to go no-cook.

If you are in the US, this is the stuff to go with.

80-90% ethanol. The regular red can stuff is only like 45%.

Ok maybe not most, but all of EU and the US. I honestly couldn't tell you what Africa/Asia/SA are doing. Most countries with taxes on alcohol would want something similar in place since ethanol is so cheap to produce industrially. It takes away the point of an alcohol tax when you can just go to a hardware store and buy a liter of 95%+ ethanol for the cost of a beer at the pub.

Hey sc/out/s. Recommend me a stove to replace my wisperlite. I want it to:
-burn white gas
-be easily primed
-have an adjustable flame for simmering
-be small enough for backpacking (smaller & lighter than the wisperlite)
-under $130 USD

Edelrid and Primus make nice multi-fuel stoves that weigh less than the whisperlite. Not sure what availability where you live is like, but they are worth trying.

Pretty much every multi-fuel stove is compatible with each others fuel bottles/pumps, so priming will be the same/similar with all of them.

I know the Omni-lite Ti is available over here. It's about 2oz lighter than a whisperlite international but it's about the same size and retails for nearly twice as much.

take dry wood, use saw to cut a plus sign into it, use shavings to fill the cracks and anything burnable, small twigs, paper, and such.
Use axe to split the inner parts of the plus sign up a bit before hand. Light the top, give it 5-15 min, then when hot enough use as pic shows.

I'd imagine hard woods are best for this, otherwise it'll burn too fast and won't be able to support a cast iron pan let alone a pot.

For softer woods, sometimes you'll need to use a high heat tolerance circle of metal to hold it together otherwise. Added danger of hot metal springing free or snapping on you.

The outside of the logs are actually pretty cool to touch, you can use a metal wire to secure the base and cook and boil anything you need before the heat even reaches the wire.

Beer-can-alcohol-stove. Denatured alcohol is easy to find. I buy a gallon at the hardware store and fill little12 oz plastic bottles to pack. Roughly 1 & 1/2 oz (US) alcohol will bring about 3 or 4 cups of water to a boil, enough for oatmeal and tea for the morning warm up. Alcohol does not have the energy density of gasoline, but you can carry it in HDPE plastic bottles, less volatile & scary. Disadvantage is the stove is hard to light when it's really cold.

Trangia, no question. Jetboils are shit and can only be used to boil, hexis are shit and heavy, and gas can only be used with gas. Trannies can use any flammable liquid and if you don't have any then remove the crucible and burn solid fuel.
