The MSR lightning ascent is the biggest mountaineering snowshoe out there. Most snowshoes aren't intended for serious hiking.

Horrible binding, no crampon, no latteral traction, Your hips hurt after a few miles with a 45lb load compansating for the wide shoe and the whole "Oh I can make afire withe the magnesium shavings" Bull crap. What are a couple good brands of snowshoe for somebody just under 300lbs with gear, I'm only 5'10 but built like a brick shithouse(read: only a little fat) and I wanna get into using snowshoes, am I gonna get fucked by the shoes getting too big for my manlet legs

How the fuck do you think people make out with bear paw style snowshoes? Cree? Objibway? The military style snowshoes are huron style btw not that you would know. Use the snowshoe that matches your terrain amd snow type you fucking sped.

Moved to MI's upper peninsula for college, so much snow compared to lower peninsula. Picked up a pair of MSR Revo Ascent 25" for /outventures and absolutely loving them.

You will not be perfectly floating over all the snow and your shoes need to be waterproof/resistant. Either a boot or shoe+gaiters will work.

Started with my first pair a few years back that were an Atlas T30 Traverse. Custom model for Atmosphere in Canada. They were great, had the high end crampons and side tracks, wide lift bar, but had plastic ratchet straps which kept catching on the webbing, loosening, and snapping off. Exchanged twice, and eventually replaced with a new pair of Atlas Access 30s. Managed to get a 2nd pair via lifetime warranty swap of the Traverses.

I pretty much go whenever I can up here central Canada. Plenty of cool terrain and lots of snow.

I know I'm not that cool, but I paid less than $100 for them because REI garage and dividends are my friends. Also seemed like the right choice since I'm new to the snowshoe.

Any of the MSR ascent series. Revo, evo, lightning. They're all designed for serious mountain terrain, like the Whites. They've also got a lifetime warranty. If you manage to break that shit, MSR will stand by it.

I have been toying with getting fitted out to do some longline trapping next winter, are the ascent series capable of longer treks carrying/ pulling a fair bit of weight, or is there a better tool for that job?

I can vouch for this too.

Proper winter, waterproof hiking style, with a solid sock. Something like a SmartWool Hike/Trekking.

Gaiters can be opted out of if the snow is not too deep, otherwise, do em up.

I'm between boots at the moment and most of my funds are current pre-allocated so am trying to avoid buying a pair of boots for <48 hours of snow shoeing. However, once I'm in Switzerland I'll see what my friend says the conditions are like and go on his guidance. Fingers crossed I don't need to fork out.

I've only been once in about 5 feet of fresh snow and it was insanely difficult. It actually turned me off of snowshoeing. Are trails that much better?

You just had some bad terrain. Usually the ice pukak layer migrated upward after snow making it not as much to sink in.

On average breaking trail I sink 4-12" on step. Occasionally I find some really weird powder that I just fall thru, but that happens maybe 2 times a year.

You should also check your weight rating for the shoe. You may have been pushing them too far.

Make no mistake, it's not a magic device that repels snow. Breaking trail on hilly terrain is some 1000/Calories an hour. Best exercise you can get in winter.

They'd be capable but long line trapping and tree tapping are better suited to big ol' high flotation tubbs snowshoes. The difference is that you can do serious hiking in MSRs but can't in the high float tubbs.

hey my man, Minnesotan winter camper here. i highly recommend the snow shoes from the traditional category. i use the Ojibwa pattern, but find what meets your needs.

are you out in the open, in the forest, do you have a pack, do you need to pull a sled, will you be riding a snow mobile?

Just ordered some 22'' MSR Denali Ascent with 8in floatation tails for around 120$.
They're slightly used and I would have preferred 25's and that's my weight range with a pack but the snow this winter has been so powdery that I sink 30-50cm when walking in the woods when using a friends 25' snow shoes so I'll keep the tails on all the time unless I'm heading up to the Fjäll where the snow is more packed in which case the 22' will be perfect.

I'm considering ripping out the bindings and replacing them because the MSR bindings I've used in the past have been a pain in the ass.

The 22" is how that model works. They sell them undersized so they're smaller and lighter.

Keep the straps. You won't find a more secure binding system that you could put on those.
