any of you /out/landers live in something less than a home?
I'm occupying an abandoned grocery store from the 50s at the moment but it's extremely derelict and I might move out soon because snakes and shit keep getting in.

After college I'm thinking of building a rudimentary log cabin to live in for at least 3 seasons. I don't see the point of paying rent when I'm perfectly happy roughing it, and able to maintain hygeine so I can keep my job.

That's awesome. I really hope you do post pics, this is actually really interesting to me.

I was having a conversation with some friends about what we "wanted to be when we grow up" (as sort of a joke) and I brought up the concept that when we all get out of college we could all live in the forest in tents and hunt/grow our food instead of living normal lives.

Lived April-December 2005 in my 1998 Dodge Dakota with a camper shell.

Held a job that entire time, went to school.

On short vacations followed bands on tour, went to boundary waters, rock climbing in Colorado, good times, no rent.

It's easier than you think if you just let go and do it. And have a plan for basics like showers/laundry/etc. to keep you at least semi presentable for jobs/trips to civilization/etc.

I spend the summer and fall of 2008 living in my Subaru. Shit was cash, I camped a bunch, rock climbed a bunch, and smoked a ton of weed. Then I ran out of cash and got a job at whole foods, then went to grad school, now I'm married and miss living in my Subaru.

After everything went to shit in 2008-9 a ton land parcels where people were individually speculating stopped having thier taxes paid. I dove on and got a 600 ft wide by 1500ish parcel for the amount of back taxes. Here is the cool part, it was on the peak of a mountain, less than a hour & 15 minutes hike from civilization and bus service. I built a okay 20x15 cabin and hiking in drinking water is a bit of a bitch sometimes during the summer. I made a ghetto spring snow hot tub with rocks and sackrete that I heat by heating up rocks and putting them in the water.
Telling a woman you own a house on a mountain top is a real quick way to get laid though. You need to have the picture in your phone to convince people though.
It has been about 4 years so a lot of these properties are going to be going to auction soon. Check with your county assessors.
