I mean people have hiked the AT on crazy low budgets. You could spend nothing on food if someone posted you all your resupplies and didn't ask you to pay them back...

You can be super budget and raid hiker boxes and stock up at trail magic like a dick and only buy ramen. Its doable but it honestly sounds miserable as fuck. I spent about $15-$20 a day over the course of my hike, but it was a vacation for me.

It can be done depending what you buy. Bread loafs at $1. Hotdogs you can get 8 pack for $1. Those are just examples. Other cheap meals: Grilled cheese, Tuna melts, Soups (Just add a little water and a potato/carrot, ramen as mentioned, honestly a lot of pasta types. More examples french toast, pancakes, DIY trailmix, baked potatoes, mash potatoes, If you grow your own veggies that does cut some costs. If you find items that are buy 1 get 1 free in the meat section it is pure awesome cost savings. You can get 16 pieces of bacon for $3 on sale (2 slice per person at 18 cents), 12 eggs (not easy to hike around with but for cooler for $1 (1 egg per at 8 cents). Add 1 slice of toast for a total of 34 cents per person, per breakfast.

This is pretty reasonable desu. Works out to about 3 grand, and as long as you don't stay in hotels very often or need to replace a lot of gear, this is average budget stuff.

All you need to bake potatoes is a fire. Just last weekend I went on a camping trip with a friend, and threw a couple potatoes wrapped in foil in her ruck. Just threw them in the campfire and let them cook for a while I prepared the rest of our dinner. Easy as hell, just make sure to fish them out before the skins start to burn up.

When it is all averaged out yes. That includes town food and trail food. But no I did not eat at a restaurant every meal. I did splurge on steaks occasionally and nice meals but I tried to stay with all you can eat buffets if possible and pack some out for later at the hostel or that evening in camp. I hiked with a guy who made it all the way from Springer Mtn to Hot Springs NC on $150

Although honestly, you shouldn't need to do anything to an egg to ensure it keeps for a few months. Problem is finding eggs in America that haven't had something done, normally the protective layer of the shell is washed off so they look nicer.
