Anyone else enjoy just going out and cutting down trees?

What gear do you use?
Ever been close to an accident?

The Swede saw (bow saw). Nothing quite like it. Been using one since I was a kid and have now become so proficient in using them I cringe whenever I see people dabble with them in woodsman competitions. Even fully grown pinus sylvestris (Scots Pine) and picea abies (Norway spruce) trees are a piece of cake to take down.

I use a classic woodsmens axe and a kukri, kukris for smaller branches obviosly.

I don't like cutting things down for no reason, it's senseless.

There's nothing like spending a good few hours chopping a large king-sized tree and waiting for that finial glorious snapping noise. Really makes a camping trip in my opinion. Boy, I must have cut down at least 50 trees over the years. Kind of a habit now, I guess.

Glad I'm not the only one on /out/ who does this at least.

I just go out into the woods and pick up deadfall. I get enough for a 2 month long winter that way without cutting a single tree down.

We've got those borer beetles here (thanks, Asia) so a lot of dead trees still standing and I like to push them over. I do it as a safety measure so they won't fall on some unsuspecting hiker on a windy day. Some go over with just a light push which is very satisfying (HULK SMASH) but others need some work. I winched an 8"er leaning over a trail to the base of a healthy tree and cranked till it snapped off a third of the way up. The top half was like a bat studded with nails and I narrowly missed being impailed half a dozen times when it came flying down the rope. Closest I ever came to an accident.

another one almost hit me, but i escaped by taking cover behind a nearby rock which the tree then fell over

I get eco-sad if I have to cut down a live tree, but if it's dead, it's one of my favorite things to do. I don't own a chainsaw, but I bought a full-sized felling axe at a yard sale that's an absolute joy to use.

I remember once I cut down a whole field of banana trees just for the hell of it. It was surprising how much destruction I caused in such a short amount of time. Cutting those trees down felt like cutting through paper. Banana trees are so pulpy and weak, and I showed my masculinity by dominating that weakness.

The funny thing was, the owner came up to me and told me he was growing them for charity. Never laughed so hard in my life. All in all, an A+++++ /out/ experience. Will repeat next time I'm in town.
