>>1185407Try that medium set up on the surf to see how it is. What is your rod spec? Length, line rating, lure rating? I’m talking about a medium bass/salmon or medium light inshore rod. A medium offshore/surf rod is a different thing. You gotta look at the rating.
I can tell you that yellowfin croakers are the most likely thing you will catch first and they fight much better than mackerel. They can reach up to 15+ inches easily. I’ve had days where I run into wide open croaker school with nothing but 15+ inches croakers. Also, they are good swimmer in the surf so the harder the surf is, the tougher the fight is for them as they can nagivate in the break very well.
If you are fishing an UL in the surf, you are asking these combination of conditions
1) calm water
2) no or little wind againsy you or sideway
3) existance of deep trough close by so you can reach with an UL set up
4) no sea weed, kelp, or grass debris
That sort of condition can be 1/10 to 1/50 of your surf outing depend on which beach you are going for. That’s not even taking consideration if you can get fishes to bite there or not. I don’t care how experience a fisherman is, they are not fishing UL in the surf with 3-4ft wave and 10kts wind working against them. UL overall is a possible but a niche set up. It’s much better for you learn with a basic flexible medium set up first. Surf fishing is a lot different and more challenging from catching mackerel in the pier. Mackerels are morons overall and literally will eat anything anytime. Once it clicks then you’ll have a lot of fun surf fishing but you’ll feel lost if you get skunked in your first few attempts.
