I'm currently in Patagonia for the second time. I'm at villa o'higgins right now. I can't recommend coming here enough. There is a lifetime worth of mountains to climb here and hardly any people when you get out of the tourist areas. Plan on sending at least a month here to even begin to see it. I would recommend flying into coyhaique, chile and then hitchhiking and busing your way south along the caraterra austral. Cerro Castillo and Cerro San Lorenzo are worth doing 3 - 10 day treks /climbs at between coyhaique and Cochrane, but Puerto Rio Tranquilo, chile Chico, and Puerto Bertrand are worth a stop too. The avellano towers are unreal to see as well, like torres del paine byt with no people. Tortel is a cool village on the fjords to see as well. From tortel and Puerto Yungay you can take a ferry (24 hours) to Puerto natales, which is absolutely worth it. I spent a month kayaking in the fjords between those places, where the ferry goes, and it was by far the most stunning place I've ever seen.

I would avoid Torres del Paine unless you like crowds on par with Yosemite valley in July. So chalten is definitely worth at least a week long visit, especially to hike the huemul loop if you aren't a climber.

If you can afford it take one of the NOLS Patagonia courses, they are very good. Also learn spanish or you won't be able to talk to anyone but other tourists

argie here confirming that shit also gets crowded in summer in the other side of the andes. avoid january and february specially, late nov and december are wonderful, march and april you get to see the autumn colors.

argie side of andes is beautiful, ots of lakes, hikes, woods... chilean patagonia has the sea and the fjords right there, the valdivian forest, amazing.

top of villarrica volcano in chile, years before it turned into disneyland.
