Sailboat vs Apartment

For my next year of college, I'm considering buying a sailboat and living at the local marina as opposed to renting an apartment/house

There are several okay looking boats on Craigslist in the $1500-3000 range, and the marina costs $200/year.
This is opposed to the $400-500/month for an apartment in this area.

I know literally nothing about sailing or owning a boat. Is living in a boat a good idea? What do I need to know?

First off, you're going to have to put up with people docking/launching boats at all hours of the day and night, as well as people just hanging around being noisy and boats aren't exactly soundproof. Secondly do you get seasick? Enjoy trying to sleep in shitty weather with the boat rocking back and forth. Still seems a better option than a shitty apartment.

It's doable, but anything under 30' are pretty cramped, and it's probably not possible to stand upright if you're around 6' or taller.

I suggest you install an automatic bilge pump if it doesn't have one

The marina offers showers, electricity and water as part of the $200.
The boat in pic related is $1500 (no engine) and 32'.

As much as I like boats and think living aboard is in general a great idea... Honestly $400-$500/month is cheap for an apartment and will be amazingly more comfortable and convenient. The boat/marina will just add untold complication when you should be focusing on school.

I've heard boats described as "a hole in the water into which you pour your money". Make sure you get whatever used boat you buy professionally inspected. It will cost some money but save you quite a lot in the long run.

and i charge more like $100 for a carburetor rebuild for a simple one. and something like a 40hp 2 cylinder is normally still a simple carburetor easier to clean and fix than many lawnmower carbs but boat carbs take a lot more to get off and back on the motor

I am a professional small engine guy and i do boat motors for friends and neighbors or really anyone who asks me
fuel delivery on outboards is very basic to me
the ignitions look like they are from Mars
propeller lower unit and the cooling system are not too hard

Boats are hardly insulated at all, they're for warm weather usually, unless you're spending a lot more than $3k.

You'll be cold, sick of constantly rocking back and forth, tires of not being able to stand up, and sick of walking across the dock to the marina at 3am when you need to use the bathroom.

Or just use the bathroom on the boat and pay someone once a week to pump it out. That's not cheap either depending on where you are.

A houseboat would be a waaaaayyyyyyyyy more practical idea. They're basicslly a floating camper.

A small sailboat is meant to sail, the living quarters are secondary. They are just big enough to sleep in and sit in, that's it. 50 sq ft if you're lucky with 5 ft ceilings.

Get a gym membership for showers or shower at the local University. I was forced to do this for 2 years after a fucked up back surgury and it cost me all but $50/mth for gas. Nobody EVER fucked with me @ night and I had a comfy bed to sleep in (middle bench seat).

in many marinas a live-aboard permit is worth over $100k.

It might sound like a good idea at first, but you're gonna hate it when summer heat comes in full force and winter really settles because your boat has no insolation or climate control whatsoever so the tiny cabin will get stuffy in the summer (and remember you have only one door and probably no windows to open) and really fucking cold in the winter.
For the budget you mention, you'll just have a bunk that might turn out to be too small for you, you won't have much room to store any food and a tiny fridge, you'll have the shittiest of kitchens and will need to buy refills for your gas heaters.
Living on a boat is a good idea IF and ONLY IF you have loads of money to invest into it so you can get a proper boat and not a floating matchbox.
