no, that means that if you cast it out then start reeling in it will dive to 4 feet. water is not compressible so it's always got the same density. basically if your jerk bait sinks at 1 foot it will sink at 100 feet just the same, but it might take forever to get there.

Hello Senpais can I get some help with jigging for rainbow trout?
The lake I go to has green water and visibility is pretty poor. The farthest I can see my lure in the water is like 1 foot maybe.

I see people catching trout on tubes by jigging for them from the dock or shore. I'm not sure what kind if action I'm supposed to be going for as I feel that I am jigging too hard or too soft.

I have a 7ft Berkley lightning rod medium action with a shimano Lx 1000 r reel with 2lb fluorocarbon line.
What kind of jigs should I use?
What color looks best in green water?
Are rooster tails effective?

These are stocked trout BTW

Actually from my understanding, cold water has higher density ergo a bait that sinks at higher temperatures will have a more neutral buoyancy at lower temps. Plus how does it only dive to 4 feet if it sinks? Does it stop being pulled down after 4 feet and subsequent jerks elevate it in the water column?

- paddletail swimbait plastics
- craw profile plastics
- straight tail worm plastics
- 2/0 and 3/0 offset round bend hooks
- spoons in any size from 1/4 oz to 1 oz, one brass and one nickel (at least)

You can catch smallmouth, largemouth, spotted, and striped bass in any part of the country any time of the year, as well as pike, pickerel, small muskie, bowfin, snakehead, or anything else big enough to eat these lures. That’s my list for a good base of lures, expand from there.

Excellent first setup. If you really start getting into the smaller water trout stuff it might be worth it to invest in an ultra light/light setup. That rod should be perfect to learn with for now though

honestly, you did great. as time goes on you may get more specialised gear, like a fiberglass rod for trout, and a heavy baitcasting combo for frogs and punching and stuff, but that's all well down the line, and that one combo will still be serving you when you get to that point (assuming nothing gets broken)

Great reel so far. I got it after I put in my fucked up symetre in for service. Shimano just hand me back the NASCL for the service price of $25 after they determine that the symetre was too damaged to be serviced.

I'm alive, although I really shouldn't have been out on the ice, it was rotted out and there were plenty of holes in the ice and water everywhere. There were a few big open water spots and I even was casting lures in it. Some spots were pretty good, 8 inches of rotting ice, other spots it was maybe 2-3 inches of rotting ice, to which I was a bit frightened to be on. I fell though a couple spots right by shore but I had my waders under my snow pants so it wasn't deep enough to be a problem. Worth it though, I found that the bluegill really really like around sunset and don't like the midday that much, as if they can tell the difference between grey and slightly darker grey through the ice. Bass seemed to just be happy that it wasn't -15 today.

Float fishing like in a float raft or like using floats with eggs and stuff? A float is way better than a bobber, I recommend using slip bobbers. I fished an egg sack on a size 8 hook with a split shot 8-10 inches up, and the line maybe a foot longer than the depth, tinking it off the bottom . Never caught a single fish. I used a rapala, second cast caught a steelhead. Used a maribou jig with a minnow and caught a salmon. That being said, people catch them with eggs. Long rod and know where they are.

You'll want a longer rod 8-10 ft, small slip or thill bobbers, 6 lb test mono or braid with a mono leader, #8 to #12 hooks, and for bait whatever works in your area, egg sacks, minnows, maggots, trout worms are all worth a shot.

The trout dough is a good rod, but there's really no need to launch the bait. Not a big deal unless the river is over 100 feet wide, you really only have to cast to the middle or wherever the fish are holding and let it float downstream. The bobber should be enough to do a 30-50 ft cast. Or if you have waders you can get even closer.

My trout arsenal-
- Johnson Shutter spoons, 1/8 oz, treble hook removed and a fly put on the split ring
- Blue Fox Bullet Fly, only use these occasionally, too much line twist
- #10 aberdeen or equivalent sized salmon egg hook with a Gulp Alive trout worm in bubblegum pink
- drift fishing a fly on spinning gear, put fly in water, open bail, let the current drift it over a trout’s head. Really only works if you can see the trout

There's 2 ways I use a rooster tail. One is to find the sweet spot speed and reel in consistently. For me this is the slowest speed that the spinner rotates correctly. Perhaps about .5 to 2 feet per second depending on the individual lure, there is some variance.

The other technique I use is reeling it up to the surface and then letting it fall. I generally only do this is areas without snags where fish are deeper.

Mepps are cool but I use mostly southbend since they are cheap at walmart and work.

Buy both and try for yourself. There won’t be one diffinitive answer to that because it mostly comes down to preference and how you want to fish. With a pooper you can fish super slow to moderate speed with as many pauses as you wish. Propeller bait needs a constant retrieve without pauses. Both work. Like I said just up to you what you, or the fish are in the mood for. As far as what baits, even the cheapest of poppers will catch fish so don’t worry about looking for “fancy” ones. For proppeller baits it’s basiclly the same but I try and aim for the mid priced ones because the cheapest ones usually don’t spin as well as the slightly nicer ones.

but regardless, my go-to thread for anything numph/dry fly is ollive 6/0 danvilles, it cords up and gets really strong, it flatens out and makes nice smooth bodies, you can split it for split thread dubbing if you really want to, and no matter what, it's almost always close enough colour wise, wheather the fly is black, white, brown, or anything else, a head of olive danvilles always seems to look good on a nymph, emerger, or dry

fuck i forgot to mention that i would probably have the tails measure half a hook shank, nymphs have really short tails, and emergers would have the same tail as the nymph until they get fully out of the case. a good way to measure is by using the tips of your scissors just after you tie them in, measure the hook shank to the length you want the tail, then measure the tail with the scissor tips and adjust as necessary

Some people swear by buzzbaits and I haven’t really done shit with them. Last couple times I have tried using them, I had snakeheads and gar chomping at them and missing and snakeheads never hit the bait a second time. Only other topwater I have luck with are soft baits like Zoom Horny Toads rigged with an EWG worm hook and no weight and run it just fast enough to keep it on top of the water.

If you're just going after those little guys then 2 lbs is probably good enough, but if there are any old breeders in there I'd use 4. I use 4 for most of my UL stuff and its enough to battle the occasional lunker northern that takes my perch rig or big bass that beat the dinks to my bait. It's also good enough behind light tackle. Either way you go I'd probably pig out most on the line because cheap mono won't get your shit out as far or have as nice sensitivity for light bites as a better one. I put P line flouroclear on my ice setup and I prefer it to the expensive ice line that I put on before it. P line is generally some good stuff and I would recommend it. I got a quantum optix size 10 I think. Pic related. My rod is a Shakespeare one piece glass ultralight. It's a good rod, but it is one piece and that kinda sucks so I usually use my two piece I found under a bridge. I'd consider using the smallest worm you can, or a spinner if you're looking for fun. You can also use a float with a few dry flies tied on the line. I saw a bunch of people doing that by a water discharge and absolutely killing the fish. It's not a high brow way to fish compared to fly fishing but fishing is fun no matter how you do it. I've never really associated trout with plastics though. Good luck friend.

I mean I lose maybe 1 fly or trip on average, I wouldn't say I'm loosing them all the time, but remember, you're only tying them for the fish. You don't need an ultra realistic fly to catch fish especially in moving water. As long as it's the same size, general shape, and general color as what they're eating they usually take it, and stocked trout take anything that looks like it might be a bug. In 6th grade I couldn't afford hackle so I tied "the puffball", it was just the tail and body of the standard dry fly (like an Adam's) but for the legs and wings I took a little bit of deer hair or elk hair and cinched it down to form a ball. Caught my first and many other trout that way.

That $450 loomis rod? You can build it for about $200 (not counting start up stuff). also rods are usually made with a certain reel in mind. If you have the reel with you when you build the rod you can space the guides to that specific reel. This will give you greater casting accuracy, distance, and more power when fighting the fish. Plus it's really bad ass to catch fish on a rod that you built. Most of all it's just fun.

Granted most of the benefits are pretty small. I mean if the extra 5-10ft of casting distance doesn't matter that much to you, or you don't feel like you have the time, ect... I can't recomend it.

But if it's something you'd be interested in I HIGHLY suggest going to a mud hole class. It's $200 and get to build a rod and you get a lot of the supplies you'll need for future rods included in the class. There's probably $50 worth of ectra stuff you actually need after that (not including blanks and what not).

Honestly yeah. The most important things are finding the spine and guide spacing. If you do those two things right nothing else matters *that* much. If you don't wrap your guides good they may not last as long, but you'll still get at least a good season or two out of it. If you don't think you're paying for the name and labor on a $450 rod you're delusional.

They use a really nice blank ($150 or so on mud hole) and mid grade guides (~$50 for a set) and then your cork/Eva and reel seat will run about ~$30. So for ~$230 you can build and extremely nice rod. For $100 you can build a better rod than anything else you'll find in that price range.

As with any hobby you could spend $400 on components for one rod. It's all up to you and that's the best part imo. You could buy a nice blank and put some basic guides on it, and it'll still be a great rod. You could buy a cheaper blank and but nice guides on it, so it'll last forever. It's all up to you. Not to mention you can design it any way you want, so if you've ever wished a rod was a different color, had a different hook keeper, ect... You can put that into your rod so it's what you want. Or you can just make all your syper simple with black/grey wraps so it'll match with anything.

It does well with both large and small hooks. Pic related is a size 2 bass hook (largest I have) and I've tied stuff as small as size 18 with no issue. I pushed down on the hook as hard as I could and it held fine.

As far as depth, it’s a matter of getting information from others previously on the ice or trial and error. Yesterday we walked out from shore to 11-12 feet and immediately started getting into them. Use nvaionics if you don’t have a way to find depth. We had a flasher with us we used to confirm the accuracy of what depth we were at. We were fishing a bay off of Lake Ontario though which is pretty different than my home lake (Oneida lake). Where you have to go a pretty good distance off shore into 25+ foot of water.

Are snap swivels newfriend tackle? I don't always use them but if I'm using tip ups, snells, jigs or if I'm changing lures a lot I use them. I've used them a lot in the past and don't seem to have had any trouble catching fish. In my eyes I think they act like a flasher and attract fish. Plus when I fish for pike I see a lot more line snaps when I don't use them so they must protect the line from teeth a bit too. Not to mention they improve the action of some spoons .

I'm not sure if a canoe would be good in my lake. Sometimes I paddle through 5 foot waves and I'm surprisingly comfortable doing that in the kayak, well timed strokes can save my ass. I don't see any reason to upgrade unless it is to a nice vessel that I can take a couple miles out and not worry that I'll die in 5 foot waves.

Probably not, they're not as nice as real kayaks obviously, but they're a whole lot easier to carry in a backpack along with a battery operated pump opposed to portaging a canoe. Plus you can carry it in your car without enlisting the same technology used to strap a space shuttle to a Boeing 777. I've used one before, they're kinda awkward to fish in and you gotta be careful getting in, but they'll get you around a small pond or a bay of a lake. I don't know if id feel safe in big waves and wind likes to blow them around like sailboats. But for the conveince they're definitely worth it because the commitment that is involved taking a kayak out is too much to be worth it, especially since I drive a two door with a sunroof.

But in all honesty as long as you're careful and not around sharp sticks it be good. I'd consider the intex Challenger or Seahawk rafts because they're cheap, so if you're gonna ram a sharp branch full speed, you lose a 25 dollar vessel , do the same with an inflatable kayak and it's a $90-100 piece of plastic.

I was a little hesitant to put N.Pike higher than musky, but pike will eat anything that comes their way and catching 20 in a day is not uncommon. Musky are slender bitches and just like to follow stuff around and fishing for them is less satisfying, and for similar fish I'd take the bolder one.

Some bass fishermen buy boats worth more than 50 times that of my car. They launch their expensive plastics with memecasters and rarely carry a spinning rod. What makes me mad is how they use 15-20 pound line to horse in dinks all day. They rarely even fight fish. And some of the serious ones who buy expensive boats go autismo mode if you are fishing in their "spot" as if they own the water. There's a surplus of bass fishing YouTube profiles and they all do the same thing. They took all the fun out of fishing. Not all lmb fishermen, just the gear obsessed zealots

Does anyone know a good place I can send my reel in the USA to get a tune up? It's an older stradic and she just don't spin like she used to. Ice fishing for what? Because panfish you can use a tiny little plastic rod and spool that looks like it belongs at a carnival game with magnetic fish, wheras if you were pulling big lakers out at 40 feet you'd probably want something a bit different. In most cases though from my experience fish don't fight as hard as in summer, you just gotta have a nice drag where they get tired out.

Definitely this. Tenkara is hipster cane pole fishing. They pick up tenkara so they can fish without the memory of being bullied and abused by their more masculine family members. They can make for good travel rods though so I guess if you want it to catch bluegill when you visit family on the holidays then go for it.

It takes a bit of messing around to get used to. You have to retrieve slow enough for the fish to be interested but fast enough for the the tail to be kicking. It’s also varied depend on the lure and the property of the plastic. Also, you have to get it to the right depth. Hard baits are relatively easier since they have more consistent action that can be triggered easily. Hard baits also dive to very specific depth

You can also crawl or bounce your plastic swimbait on the bottom when the condition demands it as the hook is exposed on top. I still think it’s kinda funny I started watching him and all his buddy’s YouTube channels when they were small as fuck and as I continued to watch I grew to hate their videos. Not because of the content, but because I’d grown to know the people making the videos a little too much and they just seem so annoying now. Only fishing channels I’m subed to these days are <2k sub local fishing channels. The content of some of these guys are putting out honestly blow those shilling faggots out of the water too and they only get a few thousand veiws tops.

They're not wrong though. Went fishing yesterday for about an hours. In Missouri, water temp was 38F, shaded areas still had ice. Caught six bass on jerkbaits, only threw a Megabass Vision 110 and a Rapala Shadow Rap. Both produced. Also threw a shakey head, never got a bite on it. Fish were up kinda shallow in 6ft of water where it was sunny.

Bass aren't gonna be taking massive lures. I caught some lunkers on 1-2cm waxworms. Remember that their metabolism slows down in winter and they can only eat a few minnows at a time. Sure they're more active when they're warmer but it doesn't mean they aren't eating. I caught a 16"er when the air was -2. If the water is colder than 39°F the bass are gonna be down deep because any water colder than that is gonna rise to the top because of thermodynamics. Keep your lures small. Small plastic nymphs or little tube baits will work or waxworms or meal worms. If your bait shop doesn't have them PetSmart will. In my experience I have more luck in ponds as opposed to lakes because they have a limited spot they can go. If you have a good kayak, a life jacket , and some good gloves, then vertical fishing will help you.

I can agree with you, man. Bass can be fun to catch, but only for the first few of them. I've lived in Louisiana for the past couple years and that's all people here care about catching.

I'm from North Dakota, so the real snobs that I hate are the walleye fisherman. I've seen people keep 8 inchers just so they could fill their daily limit. Absolute scumbags. Devils Lake, one of the best walleye fisheries in the entire country has been so overfished by them to the point where the biggest I've seen is maybe 14 inches.
