I have a Buck 119 and really like it. I've had it for about 10 years and use it while hunting, fishing and mushroom hunting. I like the clip point and it feels good on the hip in a sheath.

If I didn't have to save money, I would buy a custom 119 with an S30V blade and buckeye burl handle. I bought a custom Buck 110 last year in S30V, buckeye burl, nickel plating and was very pleased with the result.

I always have my Buck 119 when doing bush work or hunting/fishing and it is my favorite big knife.

buy a mora instead (either carbon steel or stainless is fine)

i like buck but their steel is pretty shite quality, it takes a fantastic edge but dulls again very quickly

420HC is a fine steel. Edge retention could be better but it's easy to sharpen and, as you said, takes a great edge.

I already have a mora but i don't like the scandi for doing anything other than wood and I wanted something a bit bigger. Thanks for the input though.

If you can afford it, look into the custom knives. The S30V is not as easy to sharpen but it's a great steel. I am looking at the site know and the chipflint and black cherokee options look pretty interesting. The buckeye burl is beautiful, but there are other nice woods offered (ironwood).

Either way, it's a solid knife.

try a KABAR or an Ontario knife(SP8 is the big one I think? cant remember), theyre about the same price and same size and theyre rock solid

I can tell you from first hand knowledge they are handy in a fight till they get stuck in bone. Other than that they are a decent knife for the price if you know how to keep them sharp, wich is not hard.

In that case I suggest the buck zipper, and skipping the logs. The 'gut hook' is an extremely handy tool for game.

Buck has been inconsistent as a company as of late. They will make a knife with one kind of steel and switch it for two others as supply or cost cutting issues. When it comes to buck, inspect the knives in person and know how to tell the differences between steel types, esle you could get fucked.

It's an imitation. Moreover, Buck is straightforward on their site that the knife you posted is made in China, while the knife OP is asking about is made in Post Falls, Idaho.

420HC is similar to 1055 high carbon, just with rust resistance. So, perfectly adequate.

Chopping is fine. I wouldn't baton.

The Buck Reaper or Endeavour is your harder use tool that you can baton with. The Buck Compadre is your pry bar.

Their steel is actually consistent as hell, anon. They've used 420HC for a long time now, and their heat treat is one of the best around.

Their Chinese made stuff uses US imported steel; it's the same stuff.

Though, much of their stuff is all US made.
