Big one: Nikon D90. Fast, easy to work .... big, expensive, heavy.

Have-more-often-than-not: Sony DSC-H2. Older "super-zoom" bridge camera. Has a lot of the same features my Nikon has, but with a smaller sensor and a little more difficult UI (most settings are in menus, rather than a button). Some of my best photos have been taken with this camera, because I can throw it in my pack and not need extra lenses and accessories with it.

Then a little Contour Roam on my helmet. Click it on, look at something, have a picture of it. (Pic related).

And my phone camera, but I don't really consider that a "camera". It turns out shit pics.

I bought a Canon Powershot Elph 300hs.
It doesn't take any of those super quality photos but it does:
1. fit in my pocket
2. goes from off to taking a picture quicker than any other digital camera I could get at the time.

It doesn't take too many times missing a neat photo while you wait for your digital camera to turn on before that becomes a primary concern.
My 2 cents anyway.

It's heavy and bulky, but it's incredibly sturdy, and as it is fully mechanical, it doesn't require any batteries to operate.

It's extremely annoying to carry it with the shoulder sling, and taking off your 20kg backpack everytime you want to make a photo is unacceptable as well.
Fixing it to the hip belt with some kind of holster works damn well, though.

That depends on how much money you want to invest.
A good P&S is miles ahead of a cellphone camera. Especially considering that it will most likely have manual exposure settings.

Light enough to keep suspended around your neck without any issues. When I need to perform any strenuous activity I just detatch the lens from the body and keep them in seperate pockets. Works well enough for me.

I started a thread about this a while back.

I have a panasonic FT4 which is almost always with me. It's one of those waterproof / bashproof jobbies. Bought it because it's the only one I could find with a proper manual mode. It's limited though. I wish the lens was wider (it's 28mm EFL) and it doesn't go to very wide apertures. It's there all the time though. I bought it to go holiday to thailand, so I couls have it everywhere and not worry about leaving it on the beach while swimming, or getting caught in those fuckign rains over there. It took some pretty cool underwater pics while snorkelling too.

Better camera is a Panasonic LX7. This thing is fucking awesome for a compact. Proper manual mode with specific buttons / sliders for shutter speed and aperture. F1.4, which is fucking handy in lower light. Neutral density filter built in. 24mm EFL. Really good full manual controlled movie modes in 1080p. 100fps slow-mo mode is fun too. Quick, intuitive, responsive. Exposures up to 250 seconds.

Downsides are no bulb mode, and long exposures take the same time again to process (something to do with noise reduction). Other than that though it's fucking fantastic.

I can't into lugging a heavy DSLR about in the wilds, so the LX7 is as good as I'll get I think.

Can you use it in a different manner?
Finding your location while in the field, and use it as a help in navigation ?

It seems fairly accurate with the altimeter, and it'll display your current coordinates (though it took a while to find 'em). It won't display a map or anything. And the compass seems to work but only digitally in 8 steps (N, NW, W, etc).

Certainly wouldn't want to rely on it to navigate by, but as a compliment to a proper map/compass it'd be handy for finding yourself if you're not sure exactly where you are.

First time I've used it though, and it was kinda confusing. Have a peek at the PDF manual if you want to know more.

If you need one of those point&shoot cameras that are sturdy, waterproof, have great battery life, great performance, and take good pictures, this is the best one.
Not the one I use myself, but I got to use pretty much all of those sturdy cameras, and this is by far the best one I got to use.

If you want other, not really cheaper, possibilities: Pentax WG series, Nikon Coolpix AW series, or Olympus Tough series.
