Agreed. It has the potential to be very bad. I hunt in a CWD area. I get my deer tested. Some people don't (I don't understand this because its free). Which means if it makes a species jump a lot of people will be screwed as some places mix lots of deer for sausage.

What I don't get is the lack of Government effort going against it out of fear of pissing of the hippies or firewaterman. Where i live the desease was just on the eastern border of the province. Now it has reached the boundaries of elk island national park and still nothing is done because it doesn't affect humans. Fun part comes when CWD makes the jump to bovine, we have the BSE bullshit all over. Furthermore Elk island is breeding the Bison and elk livestock for Northern America. They send their over population up to buffalo woods and even yellowstone. Once the bisons there are infected they go extinct.

Let's go down the list, shall we? Ranchers introduced it to North America via sheep scrapie (which never existed on the continent before humans brought it here). Then hunter/ranchers spread it all over the country via deer farms - a thing which exists exclusively to produce living targets for hunters.

So, in summary, yet another problem caused by hunters and ranchers and blamed on the victim animals.

The government specifically ISN'T fixing the problem because rightists (like hunters and ranchers) hate the environment and try to cut funding to it at every opportunity. I'm in WI and haven't heard anything like this, can you elaborate? There was some push in the local news during hunting season to get deer samples tested free but that's it. If proof of CWD transmission to humans is found, that could get interesting.

You can't stop the spread of CWD by simply killing deer because it's already nearly everywhere and is persistent in the environment. So my understanding is that you would basically need to kill all the animals. Not just lower the population but eliminate the population entirely for a number of years. Basically kill them all now to preserve them in the future.

Two things with that, one it would be extremely difficult to do physically and politically both the right and left will have shit fits.

I'm in Wisconsin and watched CWD slowly creep towards my property, arrive, and eventually keep going. You could tell after 5 or 6 years of slow spread that there was no stopping it. Sadly everyone seems resigned to the fact that nothing can be done.
