Alright /out/, I'm building a cabin like pic related for summer. Where would I go about buying a potbelly stove for in the corner?
Also, has anyone else here built cabins or permanent base camps when /out/? Any suggestions or tips?

Checked and do you need a plasma torch to cut the slug in a propane tank? I would probably try to butcher it with a reciprocating saw without the torch.

Why don't you build one out of rocks and mud? Maybe just buy the pipe for the chimney and invent something for the door/lid.
I met a guy in Sweden who built a winter cabin with a hand made fireplace like that, he built the chimney too. If it worked there it can work anywhere.

Why not just buy one of this 60 € things?

Or just build one with an empty propane tank. Use a drill to cut multiple holes to make the perimeter of a circle, then a metal file to make the circle perfect. Put the metal chimney pipe in and seal with some product, like special concrete, special silicone, a mix of that and rockwook or something like that?

Nope, just the most unexpensive wood stove. Has a lid on the top and a drawer on the bottom to take out the ashes. Works pretty good but it's quite thin, so it won't last a lifetime, but still.

The pic here is from some guy that built a small cabin completely with pallet wood and scrap from local lumberyards (or so he claims). These things can be had for free if you know how to ask for them- department stores and such have an excess of pallets that they have to get rid of. Theoretically, your cost would be only the nails, window glass, and whatever interior furnishings you want. I'm trying to do the same thing, with pallet wood and a few Red Cedar trees on my property that I'll drop and board with an alaska mill.

Entirely possible. One of my neighbors makes yard furniture from pallet wood.

If memory serves, he stops at a truck depot periodically and they give him damaged pallets.

If you are going for a potbelly stove get something small. If not you're going to cook yourself out of that tiny cabin.

Also, I've gotten pallets before going to garages and muffler shops where they give them away. Hope that helps.

Really though, on a completely different note from my cabin, I also might have the job of restoring a two-story, two-room blacksmith's house that was built in the 1780s. The fact that this video series deals with old cabins exclusively is a godsend, I'm gonna have to bend over backwards in terms of technique if I want to get a state grant for it.

if you plan to use it permanently spend the money and do it right.

I built a shoddy one on some property I own and after 10 years is basically worthless and all rotted away.

Use pressure treated lumber, pay for a foundation if you can't do it yourself, get tyvek to wrap around it, do a real roof with good shingles, insulate the hell out of it, make sure everything is water tight and up to code. Plan out kitchen and bathroom if youre going to do running water, its easy if you preplan, not so much to retrofit.

Build it at least 2-3x the size you think you want. Mine was about 14 x 12 and it's SMALL to consider living in full time. Id probably go more like 18x30 next time for a reasonable size for 1-2 people.

I don't plan on living in it all year round, nor do I plan on living in it full time. More of a seasonal hunting cabin I'll live in a few months a year, mostly in summer, but with a month in winter and a week in spring and fall.

I'm planning on using a lot of red cedar lumber (I have a 5 acre cops of red cedar on my property) and then treating it with motor oil mixed with copper sulphate as a fungicide.

Any tips on the roof? Would cedar shingles work? How would I have to set it up to shingle it? My current plan is using some old barn siding I have lying around.

Honestly, I have a hard time remembering specific figures. The Logcabinlooms YT channel is a treasure trove of outdoor woodworking knowledge and the man has quite a few videos about his pine tar/ turp treatment. Even if you go with your mixture it would be worth checking out for his lumbering, milling, and finishing techniques.
