Indeed, our Woods are great. It is still hard to find a place far from civilisation. you always will see, hear or smell other people. I life in the southern part of Germany. I just open the map software and choose a target for the day. I avoid Weekends, public holidays and popular resorts.

For the Netherlands: how about a kayak tour? you could paddle to Denmark.

and it's always crowded with old people on bikes or tards on a school trip. I would recommend it if you're a starting /out/doorsman for foraging and what not, but as far as hunting goes you won't even get a chance to hunt a boar or fish without getting fined.

It is nice to be close to pristine wilderness, but few people actually are. I'm skeptical whenever I hear someone say "there is no place to go /out/ near me". If you look you will find someplace that is fun. Probably not a perfect place, but enjoyable nonetheless. My "nearby place" is a creek on the remote edge of a city park. I go there very often and have seldom encountered others. It is a pretty little creek with clear water, surrounded by nice trees. It isn't perfect, sometimes I can hear traffic, but life isn't perfect.

You have a point, but even though there are a ton of relatively small /out/y places near me, they're not suited to a lot of the activities I see discussed here.

Camping? Illegal and easily noticed. Campfires? Illegal and easily noticed.
Hiking? The areas are small and lack any sort of elevation. Attempts at hiking turn into leisurely strolls at best.

The Netherlands are not kind to /out/doorsmen.

Yes, but it's not as /out/-friendly as you might think.

The Netherlands have an extensive infrastructure of bicycle lanes, and cyclists enjoy a great deal of protection under Dutch law.

However, the cycle lanes are largely utilitarian. They were made to get cyclists from point A to point B, not to give them an interesting and/or appealing outdoorsy experience.

There are well-maintained paths through a lot of natural areas that you could use for cycling as well (hardly surprising, since the areas are so small), but these aren't reserved for cyclists.

My cottage is up in North Ontario, Canada. Few cottages on our lake and they are only on one side as the other side is Crown Land (wilderness). With a topographic map and a compass we've gone canoe camping for a few days at a time and you will be completely detached from civilization as Crown Land is hundreds of sq kilometers. No sound of cars, trains, airplanes, or signs that anyone has ever been where you have been. It's eerie but fascinating.
A friend of a friend of mine was fresh from Denmark and we took him on a small trip. First morning he was up first sitting by the water just listening to the loons on the lake, it was really something to see.

The Wadden islands are definitely interesting, especially if you're a birder. Make sure you're not there in the high season though, and you should be okay. Don't know about kayaking, but note that it is an intertidal zone, so make sure you take a good look at the map and pick a good time.

OP come to africa. Live in South Africa. It is amazing. Recently been on a 5 day hike. Was THE shit. Namibia is also beautiful and empty. It is actually rather civilized too in certain areas. Love it there. Some roads you go on no one drives past for days.
