Hey guys

I'm planning to go to Sweden in August to do a part of the King's trail (Kungsleden). I'm looking for someone more experienced to accompany me. I've hiked a lot when I was younger, but that was with my parents who knew what they were doing. Anyone up for this? Current plan is the first 2 weeks of July, but I could also go the first 2 weeks of September.

I speak English, Dutch (native language), French (pretty good) and very little German (just enough to communicate). My physical condition is pretty good (I cycle 20km every workday) but could be better. As soon as my exams are over I plan to go for walks with a full backpack to get used to it.

I've hiked the Kungsleden before, and while it isn't abdolutely NECESSARY to have a partner, I'd definitely recommend it, for hundreds of different reasons.
I hope you find someone, I would have been up for it if I didn't go there before. I'll be on the Hardangervidda this year.

I've done most of that trail. Lots of people (well compared to other parts uppåt there). I'll do it with you if you're a girl OP. Otherwise GLHF. Try to go for the northern part (depends on time of the year though) if you're not doing all of it. Bring mosquito repellant and expect mentally challenging distances. Otherwise, compared to bashing your way through the wilderness in Sarek or Jämtland or the other not so well planned hikes I've done up there, it's pretty very easy skill-wise. Just use good shoes and have strong legs.

I'm from Germany and currently looking for something to do after my last examen in the beginning of July.

But I really don't have much practical experience. I drive to university by bike which makes 5km/day and started lifting, but some more cardio couldn't hurt.

I also would need to get some gear together.

Posting some Kungsleden pics.

If you are thinking about the Abiske to Kebnekaise/Nikkaluokta route, I would most certainly choose some paralell route because there are so many hikers along Kungsleden. It is pretty, though.

Use something that contain DEET. Besides that: long sleeves, multiple layers and webbing. At some places along the trail there is a lot of mosquitoes. My record from when I was there was killing 12 mosquitoes with one blow.

LOL. Sweden has fredom to roam rules. You can camp whereever you like. There are, however, small huts about every 10-20 km along the route where you can pay around 30 euros to sleep in a bunk bed and use their facilities.

i saw 2 camping sites, and stayed on one, along the route there are a lot of guesthouses where you can pay for the night and some delicious german food.
There are also wooden cabins along the route, which we used for sleeping in. Than it's free. it's a litte bit in a grey area, if it's legal or not to do, we had no trouble atleast.

You can buy MyggA. It's a Swedish roll on repellant. They'll still form a cloud around you when you're walking through low altitude bush, but they won't bite. Psychologically they can kill you though if you're exhausted and dehydrated and think you can run away from them. Carl Linneaus (inventor of the species classification system) said "God placed the mosquitoes in Lappland (northern Sweden) so we wouldn't confuse it with paradise." I've yet to hear a better description of the wilderness up there. Especially late spring/summer in the more remote areas.

They're not free I think you should pay because someone fixes them up at some point. But there's no enforcing it so if you feel you can't pay then don't. I'm sure a poor hiker more or less wont harm.

Not OP, but seems like a good place to ask.

What are good sources/brands for topographic maps if you want to go hiking in Scandinavia?
In the alps I use maps from the alpine clubs. Does Sweden/Norway have something like that?

Do not expect to be okay with mosquitoes. If you have never tried it before you might go crazy. At some points there can be so many that you cannot stand still and you cannot eat without eating 2-3 mosquitoes with every bite of food.

Each country has a card service. Search the web for those. You can find good 1:100.000 or 1:50.000 for both countries covering the entire country. In addition there are maps covering certain specific specific mountain areas where you perhaps otherwise would need 2-3 maps. Maps cost around 15 euros.

Top is Abiscojaure, Alesjaure in the center. The top-to-bottom route is Kungsleden. You can leave it if you go over one of the passes to the side and get on a trail that is a lot less travelled.
You'll hardly meat anyone as soon as you leave it, and the landscape gets even more spectacular.

Yes, correct.
It was a university field trip and we took soil and rock samples, identified the local flora and fauna, and determined the glaciation history of the area, so we didn't cover much distance.

You can ascend the Kebnekaise without any special equipment. There are other routes if you want to try walking over a glacier. The mountain station at the bottom arrange tours.

You should check the weather forecast before going up. Up and down will take 5-10 hours depending on shape. You can also go by helicopter. During the summer a lot of people go to the top every day when the weather is good. Perhaps 100 people or so.

I forgot to mention that you can easily choose a route where you do not need to cross any glacier. Only the last 100 m was ice/snow covered when I was there in August 2006.
When I walked to the top I met everything between 8 year olds and 70 year olds. So it is pretty easy.

Another protip for Kungsleden is walking from south to north and NOT the other way around. Then you will have the sun in your back instead of in your eyes the whole day. And the scenery is prettier when you have the sun behind you.

Cool. I was looking into either ascending over west route and descending over "Durlings led" (name from wikipedia) to Singi, or going the tour from the other side, ascending from Singi and descending to Kebnekaise Fjällstation over the west route.

Attention OP and really everyone planning to go there this summer.
From the ninth to the sixteenth august the outdoor company fjällräven will be holding its anual event fjällräven classic.
This means 2000 hikers walking the trail and a temporary pub (in a huge tent) being set up in abisko.

So if you want to avoid crowding avoid those dates. If you'd like to brab a beer with me, let me know. I'll be there

Fishing is possible. Pic related. We did not catch much though. And only small fish. As a general rule in the Scandinavian mountains fishing is best around the tree line. Abisko to Kebnekaise is way above the tree line.

If you want to fish I would recommend the more southern parts of Kungsleden or perhaps further north in Norwegian Finnmarken where fishing is excellent (arctic char and trout).

I would certainly not recommend driving because of the distance. It is almost 2500 km each way and there are no highways beyond Stockholm so from there it is 80 km/h the rest of the way. If you are only 1 or 2 persons it is also expensive: 2 x bridge (75 eur) + 2 x ferry (100 eur) + 5000 km (petrol: 700 eur) = 875 eur. Depreciation of the car not included. My guess is that you can buy plane tickets for that amount and in addition save 40 hours driving or so. It is easy going from Kiruna to Abisko or Nikkaluokta by train or bus.

Another option is to take the train from Berlin to Copenhagen and further north to Kiruna. They have comfortable sleeping wagons and it is around 25 h from Copenhagen. When I went there I paid around 175 eur for a return train ticket from Copenhagen to Kiruna.

If you go by car I would not care much about finding a place to sleep. Just take any road away from the main road, then drive 1 km and find a place to park your car and pitch your tent 100 m into the forest. This is perfectly legal in Sweden.

If you would very much like very deserted hiking I can recommend a few places near Abisko where you can hike for days without seing anybody. And the scenery is about the same as along Kungsleden and the fishing is way better.

I'll monitor this thread.

What would you say is the best time to go? And what's the latest you would consider climbing the Kebnekaise. One of my friends just suggested going in september, but I think that's a bit late, isn't it?

I checked out some flights and for 3 people from Berlin to Kiruna and back would cost us ~800€. That's about the same I estimated for the costs would we go by car.

We'll be carrying our own food so reducing the weight some with fishing would be nice, but neither of us has any experience with that, so I doubt this will work.

It is possible. I was there in late september once. Just north of Abisko. It is the prettiest time of year, but some of the passes might be closed due to snow. When I was there we had anything between -10 to 15 degree C weather at around 900 m. I post some pics of how it looks like in September.
The best time to go would probably be late July and through August because there are fewer mosquitoes late in the summer. But more people though. You probably cannot go earlier than 15th of June, but it depends on the amount of snow.

Remeber you can buy more foods in the small huts mentioned. It is more expensive than the supermarkets, but is a very good option for stocking up on oatmeal, pasta, rice and other heavy/bulky items. You can find a list of what is available somewhere on the interwebs. I will look for it later.

If you want me to comment on the route you have to provide a more detailed map. Those lines are so narrow. I would climb Kebnekaise as a day trip and hike with rucksacks the other days.

During the summer expect everything between -5 to 25 degrees C. 3 season bag is sufficient.

There are some non-managed huts you can use. Some are free and in others you decide with your consciense whether or not you wat to pay. This is a free hut. It is a part of a larger locked hut, but a samll corner can be used as a refuge.

In the alps there are bivouak boxes for alpine emergencies. They're maintained by the alpine clubs, but hikers refill fresh water, and other supplies as well. I usually bring some tea bags and other small supplies when I know I will pass them to stock them up.

Is that how these huts work as well?

Also, I'm thinking about getting

Lantmäteriets Fjällkarta BD 4,6,8 depending on the exact route we take.

Most of the huts are taken care of by the Swedish tourist association. They are manned during the summer and you can buy things.

Then there are a few other huts that are meant for emergiencies or for eating lunch in. You cannot use those for overnight stays. But some people do it anyways.

Check the rules and regulations on svenskaturistforeningen.se they have some of their site in english, otherwise use google translate.

I don't think you need BD4. We only had BD6 for the trip between Abisko and Nikkaluokta. You can always buy more maps when there. But hey maps are nice.

Dont know if you know. But in Scandinavia you can drink all the water in the mountains. Even from small lakes. There is plenty of water. Some people only bring a cup and no water bottle because there is water everywhere.

Ive been to Abisko a couple of times and have hikes around in Scandinavia 2 weeks every summer for the last 8 years. The Abisko-Nikkaluokta was actually one of my worst trips, but if you like high mountains high north it is a nice place. I prefer more desolate, forested areas where I can go fishing.

So, for anyone interested, I spent the better part of the afternoon with hunting down ferry prices, checking train connections and so on.
Assuming you're three adults (25+) that want to get from Berlin to Kiruna and back, these are your options:

I'm not certain about this one, since I don't have a whole lot of experience with booking flights

>by car or train
Going by train all the way would cost you ~800€
Otherwise, there are two stages: getting to sweden (let's say Malmö/Trelleborg) and getting from there to kiruna
The sweden part will get you to about 550€ gas if you go by car or 561€ if you get an interrail pass for 3 adults. 3 days out of 1 month (two days overnight up to kiruna, one day back to the south 14 days later)

You can try all you want for the other stage (berlin Malmö/Trelleborg), if you add up the gas, ferry price and toll bridges, the result stays same:
about 250€
So again, we're at 800€. Fucking hell, what did I do all that research for?

With a car, however, 3 persons seems to be the magic number. Any less and your share of the gas will be more expensive, any less, and it starts to make sense to go by car. Do note however that the more ferry/tolls this includes the less important it becomes.

Generally, I don't think it matters which way you travel. With a plane you have the danger of losing your luggage, and with a car you have to drive yourself. For several thousand kilometers. Not the best way to spend outside.

Swedish train tickets vary a lot depending on supply and demand. They change daily. Remember to reserve seats in the sleeping compartment of the train if you eant to sleep well.

You don't really need much experience to climb Kebnekaise. It is a rather flat 19 km trail from the nearest road to the mountainstation. Easy peasy.

From the mountainstation it is only a 5-10 kilometres to the top. 1600 m or so elevation change though. During the summer, lots of people are walking up there. There are two huts almost on top of the mountain where you can seek shelter. If you destroy your knee you can be helivaced out like the old Swede in pic related.

So you only need to be in average shape and then you can do it. There are no places you can fall or places to get lost. The ground is made of boulders the last half of the way and the trail is clearly marked. You just walk on those. Old ladies are walking up and down. It is seriously no real challenge if you are a normal, young guy. It can be tough and tiresome, however.

Note to everyone abut SJ - the public railway company in sweden. Due to (from every side) politicians treating it like a fucking playhose it's not very cheap and the bocking isn't logical.
They have a system that increases the price ona given ticket on a given route when a) travel date goes narer and b) when more people buy tickets.

24 hours before departure you can buy last minute tickets (unless the trains are full, mostly happens on some göteborg-stockholm departures and around holidays).

They also have the above mentioned cheapo-ticket quota where a number of tickets go 90 days before departure. These does increase in price just like the regular ones.
The bad thing is that you cant be sure of a given price at a given date unless you've already paid. So if you want to go by train, buy in advance

There's 2 ways up, the eastern and the western trail. The eastern goes over a glacier and requires skill or a guide (tours go regularly).
The western is just like other people have said easy to walk up. Thing is you go up a fuckton only to come to a valley which you must cross. So down some hundred meters and up again. This can be time-consuming.
It's said at kebnekaise mountan lodge that if you're in no extraordinary condition count 12-14 hours for an easy walk up and down. A sc/out/ that has the muscles coud probably do it quicker.

I remember the valley. I hated it.

Also bring some water from one of the creeks. 1 L is sufficient. The last few km is rocky and it can be difficult/impossible to find good water.

On another note. Much of the advice regarding Kebnekaise in this thread ONLY applies to Kebnekaise because it is heavily trafficked. If you decide to climb other 2000 m peaks in Lappland you need to more careful and seek advice from locals, bring more emergency stuff and food.

This is the trail leading to Kebnekaise. Very rocky. I wouldn't do it in sneakers, but some people do.

Last year we traversed the alps and an older german couple (~50-65) came down on a route far worse than that. It was at ~3200m. They wore sandals, white tennis socks shorts and some buttoned shirt with short sleeves.

This is the simplified truth. If you go to a law-book it would say that you can't carry a knife easily acessible and that a security guard or police could take you in for that.
That's a law written with the intent of not letting people carry knives in cities and metropolitan areas without reason.
of your going /out/doors it's ok. Everybody brings a knive outdoors. Exept maybe brits...
It would however be good pratice not to wear our knife in the belt on the train but rather pack it down unless you're using it for something.

This is much more important than knife rules. You are allowed to camp, forage, have campfires, canoe and much more everywhere, also on private property.

I don't know how much you pay for the train, but an Interrail ticket might well be worth it.

Interrail Sweden would be 127€ for people under 25. 3 days out of 22 where you can use the train. So that would be include the return.
And if it's cheaper for you to travel to berlin by train, there's a night train that costs you 29€ (if you have the interrail sweden pass, otherwise 45€)

So it'd be 127+29+29+whatever you pay from your home to berlin.
That might be cheaper.
This thread has discussion on a lot more alternatives. Read through it if you haven't already.

Train tickets from home to Copenhagen are about 100/120 euro's, so that's that. I was actually hoping for some advice about the generall populace, availability of (dried) food and for example the weather. Would it be smart to bring a "fluff" mummy sleeping bag, or some more water resistent kind?

Also, i've read somewhere that Swedes are very negative on drugs, whilst i was hoping to bring a bit of weed for personal use (and perhaps sharing). How harsh are cops?

Should be available in all supermarkets. I mean, I haven't been to Sweden, but it's the case in the rest of Europe, so I don't see why not.
One of the helpful guys in this thread also posted a list (pdf) what you can buy in the serviced huts.
As for me, I'll be just drying my own fruits&vegetables before hand. It's pretty easy. Just google "drying <your food>". You can do it in an oven even. Or a microwave, though that should only be used as last option.

Someone else pointed out that a 3 season sleeping bag is enough. I'd always use a mummy bag anyway.

You what? I don't think there is something like that. I would definitely always bring a bivouac bag for emergencies but if you plan on sleeping in huts and not your tent, even that might not be necessary.

It can be quite humid and rain a lot. But the weather can also be nice, sunny and dry.

It is in English and will provide good weather forecasts, but also has a statistics section where you can seea verage weather and how the weather was at a particular time last year to get you an idea of the climate. Do note the elevation of the weather station compared to the elevation where you will be hiking. And remember that weather changes quickly in the mountains.

Sounds expensive. You should be able to get a round-trip for anything between €300-€400 as long you are prepared to travel on unusual weekdays. Traveling by train in Sweden is more expensive than going by plane. I'd only take the train for short trips. I'd say that going by plane will be the cheapest and fastest option.
