Any other AmeriCorps members here? Summer season's coming up soon enough and I'm applying to new positions with the hope of landing a spot in the Washington Conservation Corps (WCC) after having previously served in the Student Conservation (SCA) and Montana Conservation Corps (MCC). Who else is on this board with their own AmeriCorps experience? All stories/comments/questions are encouraged; let's share what we can with one another.

I was a crew member with MCC in 2016 and SCC in 2017. It was dope. Trying to get on another trail crew this year.

Best part: the location (Grand Canyon in my case) and the education award for a full service year. Got nearly 6 grand out of that to pay for school. Worst part: the pay once additional benefits were taken out. I was technically living below the poverty line and qualified for food stamps. People were great; some better to hang out with than others, but that's to be expected. I partnered with NPS staff and they were overall awesome to work with. Can't say for sure on logger boots specifically, but I've always used Danners and they serve me quite well.

Having previous experience certainly helps. Be willing to emphasize that you can put yourself through lots of physical exertion in order to hike long distances while carrying heavy equipment. Trail crews, especially back-country ones, are all grunt labor so be ready for that.

Also, good news guise. I'm interviewing with the WCC tomorrow, which is awesome because it's earlier than expected by about three weeks. If I get the gig I'll be in and around Olympic National Park. Wish me luck. :)

I was based out of Missoula in my MCC year.

SCC is the Southwest Conservation Corps. I had just as good of a time with them as I did MCC. They seem to focus (at least in the Durango office) more on saw work than MCC did.

Missoula's a cool town to be based out of; I was walking over a bridge there wearing my MCC shirt one time from the Bozeman office, when a MCC Missoula van honked their horn and waved/shouted "MCC!!!" at me when they saw me. Good times.

Most of SCC's crews in Durango were saw crews. Probably something like 7 saw crews and 2 dedicated trails crews. At MCC I felt like the ratio was a bit more evenly split.

I think SCC had a lot more front country hitches than MCC did (generally speaking).

They're both great organizations and I'm glad I spent time with both of them.

I did MCC wildlands Restoration crew, twas actually very nice, I had a good crew, we made lots of Shrek jokes

Ill type more about more the good times and stories when I get a chamce and if I can adequately type them in an entertaining way

But as far as the downsides be prepared to have very little time for yourself on hitches, lackluster access to nutritional food, overwork stress on your body, and maybe a crew that doesnt work well together

I like backpacking but have never worked on trails. Will having an irrelevant college degree and a few jobs working on various small farms give me a shot at these types of jobs?

I can't speak for high profile parks/cc's but for me to get hired it was as simple as applying and not sperging out in the interview. Haven't started yet but they said they'll provide all of the trainings.
Might be different applying to work in Yosemite or something like that though.
