My friends and I are trying to figure out if it's possible to get a job in or near a national park (specifically Glacier) that would provide room & board. I saw an opening on the actual nps website which provided housing. It was entitled "Laborer," but had very little information regarding the actual duties it entails, so I was wondering if anyone on /out/ has done anything like this in the past. I'm 19 so I couldn't work in a bar or anything like that.

Yeah, look into internships or positions through the parks, SCA, Americorps, or other similar orgs. Plenty of opportunities available if you're looking for an /out/ job.

If you're just looking to get anything that will be interesting or in someplace new, check out cooljobs. I met a couple of girls who found their gig through that site when I was in Alaska myself. The job wasn't anything crazy (working at 1 of 4 restaurants in town) but hey, they wound up in a pretty amazing place imho

I'm a janitorial contractor for the federal government, I have several contracts to clean toilets on government land.

Currently the business I own makes $250k/year and employs 12 people just wiping shit off of toilets.

we make on average a bit over $125/hour. Even entry level gov workers don't get paid like we do. So no, you won't be cleaning toilets or taking out trash or vacuuming offices. Somebody that gets paid ten times what you do will be handling that.

Today I cleaned and restocked 11 Forest Service toilets at 5 campgrounds and trailheads.

I spent 3 hours, 2 of which were driving and bullshitting with the FS guy sent out to check on me.

I made $200 for that 1 hour of work and 2 of driving/bullshitting. In a little bit I'm going to go clean 2 more office buildings for another 2 hours of work and $150 of income. I'll make $350 today working less than 5 hours.

OP isn't going to be scrubbing toilets, but if he was smart he'd look into it.

It could be anything. I interned in a National Park last summer and I worked with the laborers for a few weeks. Some of them drove around all day emptying trash cans. Others mowed grass, or painted and did carpentry work.

SCA might have some left, but I doubt it. For next year get on USA and search GS3 positions for national parks, its one of the few positions that doesn't require specific experience.

If you are deadset on getting a job at Glacier NP you need to go to usajobs,gov. You need to make a very thorough, very detailed resume and apply to every opening you see, but you will be hard pressed to actually get a call back and a job offer. You would be better applying to every NPS job that shows up and letting it take you on an adventure.

If you are married to that area geographically, look at state parks. Montana has a wealth of state parks that are just as stunning. Also look at BLM, USFS, or USGS openings, those are some fantastic jobs and locations, if you can land the position and don't mind constant seasonal work.

You can also work for concessionaires that work within the park, though those jobs are less glamorous it doesn't matter because you have free reign of the park while you are there. Plenty of time to explore.

You can also WOOF, I bet someone out there is looking for someone to do something.

well, you need to not be a convicted felon first.

then you need to have all your taxes paid up.

then you need to have a business license.

after that you need to call D&B and ask for a DUNS number and then use that to register your business on SAM.gov. Fill out your ORCA representations. Generally you also need liability insurance and if you have employees you need a EIN and workman's comp for all of them. Also of course I9-W4 forms in place.

then you need to learn how to search FedBizOpps and track market rates. Once you've got a good handle on rates you need to learn how to read and respond to an RFQ. Finally if you get the job you need to set up an account with IPP using your SAM registration.

it also helps if you know how to scrub toilets.

You can go on FedBizOpps and search how much you're paying for cleaning. Or you can ask your buyer/CO what the contract is at. It's public information.

We usually aim for the $125/hour zone, but it varies by area. Some places cost less, some cost a lot more.

Go on coolworks, there's lots of summer jobs in and around National Parks in the summer. Most of the longest and concessions are run by private contractors like Aramark and they provide food and dormitory housing. There's also tons of summer jobs in the nearby towns, you won't be in the park but you'll be close.
