What do you think about the new rules? I think they should change the patch so people who've REALLY finished wouldn't be put in with the new bullshit.

Start is at Spring Lake in San Marcos, TX. Headwaters of the San Marcos River and one of the oldest continuously inhabited sites in North America. The lake and upper parts of the river are home to several endangered species. The race start was the only way to paddle in the lake until they began to rent glass bottomed kayaks, highly recommended.

Staples dam is the first checkpoint. Race starts at 0900 checkpoint time is 1300 and is 16 miles including numerous dam portages, and winding river channel with sweepers.

River gets a little swifter after the confluence with the Guadalupe, but flattens out and meanders like a motherfucker. Part of the stretch is called the "cinnamon bun" because that's what the winding of the stream resembles on a topo map or google earth.

Race ends in Seadrift Texas after crossing San Antonio Bay on the Gulf of Mexico 260 miles downstream. Racers have 100 hours to complete the race. Finishing the race in the allotted time is considered an honor in itself, and there is a great camaraderie among racers.

This stretch is characterized by swifter water and numerous rapids, but none too challenging and all are easy to portage. The Hill Country is mostly limestone, and is beautiful if its not dry as a bone.

Limestone bluffs galore, Cypress trees as well. The river is spring fed up here, coming out of the hills with several spring fed tributaries.

What's a Dragon Boat? One of the big outrigger canoes? I've never paddled one but will one day.

Last drop on one of the numerous small rapids. The river is riffle-pool, and with the limestone bed produces fun little drops and channels.

two of my friends from highschool and their dad (they are also brothers) go every year. I would like to, but I'm a college student and any time I'm not in school I'm working so I'm limited to weekend trips to New Mexico and Caprock Canyon.

OP are you still around? My girlfriend and I had talked about setting a goal to do some sort of competition like this and last weekend we took a canoe out and I taught her same basic strokes and she loved it. Anyways this looks perfect.

I live in an area surrounded by lakes and can afford to drive somewhere with a river maybe 4 times between now and next June. Any tips on preparation for two 20 somethings in decent shape miles from any real lakes to get ready? I've only canoed in the river twice and I loved it, but as a recent college grad I never had the money to do this sort of thing until now.

I recommend training at least 100 miles a week, it is more difficult than you'd think. There is only about a 50% finish rate.

Not trying to discourage you, but go canoeing all day at least once a week, practice on a river whenever possible.

If at all possible do all of the prelim races, you can find info on their website. If you can't do them all at least do the barrier to bay so you can see how your boat handles in the bay.

Last summer I did a trip ~150 miles from Prairie Portage to the Grand Portage along the border trail in MN. 5 days of paddling and 1 day of GP, it was a blast!

There is an old town pathfinder about 2 hours from where I live. They want $350 for it. Is that a good deal?

I would recommend a Alumacraft Voyager Ultralight if you can find one, safari rig it.

If not go light as possible, kevlar or carbon fiber. Look at their website and around the web and see what other people are using. I would stay away from fiberglass or royalex for racing.

Forgot to say, that's a great boat for dicking around and general paddling, just not the best for racing. Depending on the condition that's a good price. Look for patches in the fiberglass.

If you use external frame packs for wilderness trips it makes portages a lot more tolerable. You can put the middle thwart on top of the straps and it makes it easy to carry. If you put the packs frame side down in the bottom of the boat it keeps them out of the water that inevitably winds up in the bottom of the boat.

Spencer's canoes in Martindale, TX rents race boats. I would contact them in July about next years rental. Martindale is only 8 miles from the race start in San Marcos. Maybe get there a week before and camp out and practice with the rental and get used to the heat. Its a little late to try for this year. Most of the old timers recommend a year of training to prepare for your first race.

As for the canoe go for it, its hard to beat a $350 canoe. Patching fiberglass is easy, make sure to get good light paddles like the ZRE in >>120215 it is pretty much the standard race paddle. I know it seems expensive, but remember you're going to be lifting that thing a million times as you go down river so every ounce counts.

We didn't use frame packs. we had a 6 man group, 2 alumacraft, 2 granet gear traditional portage packs, and 2 Kondos standard food packs.
