I’m kind of on the same boat as you. I’ve thought about taking a weekend trip sponsored by my University’s rec. But $50 just to be shuttled out 2 hours away to a trail I’ve already been on? 1) These guys know where the trails and shit are. This is an organization devoted to outdoors shit so you don't have to worry about finding the good trails or camping spots or caves or whatever, they already know where it is. How the fuck are you going to go spelunking without knowing where a good cave is the answer is you can't
2) It's easier to make friends who are outdoorsmen then make your friends into outdoorsmen
3) Related. If you're a freshman. This sort of club is a pre-made friend group. Making friends is hard as fuck for us sorts of fuckers who are on 4chan. Jump on that get you some friends
4) Outing club throws good parties

It could either be a great time or absolutely miserable, depending on who's in it. It's worth scouting it out to see if you can make some friends or if it's full of people you would never want to speak to. If it's the latter, you're better off just doing things alone, obviously. Don't commit.

Our out club at ASU is pretty legit. Had a tinder qt convince me to join my first semester I transfered here. The first weekend trip of the year I signed up but there were no open seats in any vehicles so didn't go. Then by the next weekend me and her were no longer talking so didn't end up going on any the whole year (also due to me working most weekends). Honesty i dont think I woulda enjoyed it anyways don't really find most normie humor funny at all and I'm on 4chins so undoubtedly a social autist but i do wish I woulda gone to one atleast cuz who knows maybe I woulda found a qt or a actual group of friends
