I'm Canadian and I think the American park system is excellent, but if it is arable and/or accessible land, the chances are it has been cleared at one point in time, especially by the first half of the 20th century. Even so-called old growth forests are largely second growth or so fragmented, subjected to edge effect etc. that they aren't as impressive pristine tracts as you might be led to believe.
Yes, there is far more old growth, pristine, and continuous forest in America than Europe, there is no question about that. But in terms of "ancient ruins" outdoors, Europe has N. America beat.
I don't know why Americans are so sensitive about being a new country, who gives a fuck? If you are so inclined, then be proud of your 300-year-old historical house without being so defensive. I enjoy walking on 4 billion-year-old Canadian shield myself.
As the saying goes, 100 km is far and 100 years is new in Europe, but in N. America 100 km is nothing and 100 years is old.
