I live in Chicago, but I want to grow bamboo as a screen for my yard. I've heard it can be highly invasive, but should I care? Everyone mows their lawns anyways, so it would be like any other weed if they didnt want it. Any experiences with growing bamboo?

Well what do you think should you care? In my opinion it should be straight illegal to grow anything foreign that could potentially survive there on it's own.

Why though? It's such an urban area, we already have so many weeds and everything else is just grass. Bamboo would be a nice change to the shitty yard of Chicago.

I am so sorry. Me too and I can't wait to leave this place. What part of Chicago do you live in?

Go to a website called bamboogarden.com they have a map to show which bamboo would be appropriate for the climate you live in under the cold hardy bamboo section.

Concerning legality, I skimmed the 525 ILCS 10 Illinois Exotic Weed Act and I didn't see anything that explicitly mentions bamboo, but you may want to read it thoroughly yourself.

it's work intensive but set the bamboo in a box somehow or set into the ground some 18-24in plastic guard or something with a ditch witch to stop the roots from growing. I did that with bamboo and I never saw sprouts on the other side, reined them in pretty well.

I grow bamboo..have no idea what variety. It takes awhile to get going...but you can contain it. Mines about 10 years old and I have it in a mulched bed at the back of my property. My raspberries are harder to contain in one bed thsn the bamboo.

I'm thinking of moving to Dallas and renting a house, negotiating with my landlord to allow altering the outdoor spaces, and just go from there. It'll have a longer growing season. I'm limited pretty much to big cities by the nature of my work, and also I couldnt survive in bumblefuck. But Im very over Chicago.

got bamboo in garden here, you better try circling the bamboo with stuff that prevent its roots to grow. (anything in the ground with 5-10cm depth)
Bamboo roots don't go deep but they spread on the surface a whole lot and can be hard to extract because the roots embeds really well to the dirt.

i had to remove 3 meters of bamboo roots that grew below the greenhouse because of the bamboo plants that we planted next to it years ago and its root went awfully further than we anticipated.
each meter took me 1 hour to remove with an hatchet and a pickaxe, the dirt was rather dry at this time.
shit led me to a couple of fucking rat tunnels with their entrances being reinforced with bamboo roots

as long you do what i said in the first line you'll stop giving a fuck about bamboo and let it grow at will

I work in HR for a Japanese company, and I prefer to work for Japanese companies in the future. When Jap companies move to the US, they all set up together so certain cities are full of them and others are completely empty. Chicago has the biggest concentration in North America (or Americas) followed by New York and LA, but fuck New York and LA. In Texas, Dallas and Houston are the biggest concentrations, but fuck Houston. I liked Dallas more when I visited.

I do have fences but the neighbors have decks that look right over. They're always outside and try to start conversations about the weather. Evergreens might take too long.

You can be sued for damages in most places for allowing an invasive plant invade other people's properties. Especially, if you are planting it on purpose. In most cases you get sued for the cost of removing it which can be in the 10s of thousands.

Get clumping bamboo to avoid all that. Running/invasive bamboo will get away from you. You'd need to grow them in a giant container with an air gap/moat to prevent them from getting away.

I have a few things in mind to still have sort of an /out/ job while staying in the IT field. (GIS, setting up networks in remote, rural locations, participate in geological/ecological research projects and work in an IT role). I just need to escape Chicago first.

HR is basically controlling the human assets of a company, so you're usually the deliverer of bad news, the one who has to crack down on poor behavior, and generally make sure everyone is working hard. Japanese companies dont have high expectations of HR though. They don't think its HR's responsibility to crack the whip; supervisors and managers do that.
